Former Arizona defensive end Louis Holmes, once rated as the top junior college prospect in the country, has a new professional team.
Holmes was signed this week by the Spokane Shock. That team might not be familiar to you, but you would be close if you guessed the Arena League. It's one step down from that -- the Arena Football League 2.
Holmes, recruited hard by USC and LSU before signing with Arizona after his 2005 season at Scottsdale Community College, never lived up to his pass-rushing hype with the Wildcats. He was a starter for most of the past two seasons, but didn't play with much of a motor or with great technique.
Holmes was not selected in the 2008 NFL draft, but landed in training camp with the San Francisco 49ers, earning some positive reviews. His long-shot bid ended when he was cut in August, although the 49ers re-signed him to the practice squad.
The team released Holmes in the second week of the season.
