Arizona’s guaranteed bowl berth will shut up some opposing coaches on the recruiting trail.

The Wildcats won’t have to hear so much about the coaches’ lack of job security while recruiting as much.

“The standard line for the last two years is, 'Why are you going there, they are going to get fired,'” UA defensive coordinator Mark Stoops said. “Let’s hope that line is out.”

The status of coach Mike Stoops and his staff has been the primary focus for more than a year. Stoops had a 17-29 overall record heading into this, his fifth season with the Wildcats.

Arizona is 6-3 overall and heading to a bowl game.

That won’t get the staff fired.

“I’m not concerned about what other people are saying,” Mike Stoops said. “I try to promote our program and what we have to offer. People can say whatever they want. That is not the way you are supposed to do it. I don’t think it helps your program.

“You are always going to get negative recruiting, that is the way it is. That is part of recruiting.”

The Oregon game is one where this program needs to step up and win a big game on the road that has meaning. Such a victory will further validate the advancement of the program. A loss will refuel the criticism that this staff and players cannot get over the hump and win a game that counts. We won in 2006 at Eugene with less depth and skilled players than we have now, no reason why we should not win in 2008.

Bill,
Different Oregon, different Arizona. Take of your tunnel vision glasses. Anyone who can't see the TREMENDOUS progress in the Arizona football program has never played the game, certainly never coached it, and is really poor at critical analysis. There is a score of reasons we could lose to Oregon. Three great runners, including the QB, playing "at" Oregon, a young D still learning how to play and worse on the road, Tui has no wheels and freaks in big games, two really good pass rushers that can pin their ears back and come after Tui; get real. There are good reasons the Cats can pull it off. They have a defense that has steadily improved during the season, a hugely improved O line, great O if Tui takes a valium, bench Grigsmouth if he falters and put in the "Pineapple Express" Antolin, pull Tui by the second half if he shows ineffectiveness, get the ball often to the that "freak of all that is natural" Gronk-man.

Go Cats
