Rob
Gronkowski's big day at Oregon is worthy of the UA record book.
The sophomore tight end caught 12 passes for 143 yards and a touchdowns in a 55-45 loss on Saturday.
"I give a lot of credit to Rob Gronkowski," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti told reporters after the game. "We tried man-to-man, match-up zones, zones -- and to no avail. They still found him. He's an exceptional player. We weren't able to cover him."
Gronkowski's 12 receptions ties him for second on UA's single-game charts, trailing only Jeremy McDaniel, who had 14 catches for 283
yards (also a school record) in a four-overtime epic against Cal in 1996.
The
other UA players with 12 catches in a game:
--
Bobby Wade (151 yards), vs. Oregon, 2002
-- Dave
Hibbert (107), at Texas Tech, 1958
-- Mike
Thomas (105), at California, 2007
-- Jim
Greth (98), vs. Iowa State, 1966
-- Mike
Thomas (83), at USC, 2007
Also,
Gronkowski now has eight receiving touchdowns (in only seven games). The eight
TDs are tied for sixth on the school's single-season list. With three games
left, including a bowl, Gronkowski figures to threaten the school record of 11,
held by Thomas (2007) and T Bell (1974).
