Ariana I. Portugal, 19, was fatally wounded after she handled a gun at her boyfriend's house and it went off and shot her on Nov. 15, a Tucson police spokeswoman said.
Portugal had been visiting the boyfriend, in the 900 block of West King Street, when she obtained a gun from somewhere inside the home, Officer Linda Galindo said. The boyfriend called police around 3 a.m. to report his girlfriend had shot herself.
Portugal's boyfriend was not injured, Galindo said, but Portugal was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives are continuing the investigation to find out what led up to the shooting, the officer said, and no charges have thus far been filed.
