It’s a sad day in the world of college basketball. On Monday, former California coach Pete Newell passed away at age 93.
Newell’s death was confirmed to the Associated Press through the University of California.
Newell won an NCAA title in 1959 and an Olympic gold medal in 1960.
Former Arizona Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson were close friends as Newell, one of most respected former college coaches, introduced Olson in absentia in 2001 when Olson could not be present for his induction into the Hall of Fame. Olson has called Newell “one of my heroes’’ throughout his career.
