Fall from cell phone tower: Edward Wellan, 22

Edward Wellan, 22, died Nov. 19 after falling 60 feet from a cell phone tower, said Mark Axer, a University Medical Center clinical supervisor.

Wellan had been working on a tower tower at 16336 S. Houghton Road, about a half-mile south of Houghton and Sahuarita roads, when he fell while he was adding equipment to the tower, said Todd Cupell, spokesman for Corona de Tucson Fire Department.

"He expired in the emergency unit," Axer said. "He basically came in and was pronounced dead."

The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health Administration has taken over the investigation, said assistant director Mark Norton, who would not disclose any additional information.

This tragic accident isn't uncommon in our industry. And judging by the lack of information in this article, I can't be sure whether Mr Wellan had any type of mandatory tower safety training. However, "Tower Dogs" are some of the unsung hero's in the telecom industry and are in key positions for every carrier's employee base (Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile Sprint etc...), making sure your cell phone is actually able to function as promised during inclement weather, rain or shine. My condolences to a fellow "Tower Dog" whose life has been cut too short.
