Gilbert High coach Jesse Parker, who has 308 career coaching victories (11 in Texas and 297 of which came in Arizona according to records kept by the late high school sports historian Barry Sollenberger), told the East Valley Tribune on Wednesday he is resigning.
Parker, who many honored earlier this season as the state's career wins record breaker despite the AIA only recognizing Arizona wins for for the record, told the Tribune:
“Under the circumstances it was my decision to step down. I talked to a few players this morning and told them what I was doing. I still want to continue coaching, but I felt it was best to step away.”
Parker, nor the Tribune article, elaborated on what those circumstances may be, but he did say he is open to coaching again.
With 297 Arizona coaching victories, Parker steps down 12 wins shy of Amhi's Vern Friedli, who won career game 309 against Douglas on Nov. 7, passing Karl Keifer (308) for the record.
