Heidi, as noted above in my blog call YOTO (Youth on Their Own) at 293-1136, http://www.yoto.org/. According to their website--"Located in Tucson, Arizona, YOTO is a nonprofit organization that serves students in grades 8 through 12 in the Metro area who, through no fault of their own, lack a stable, permanent home and a parent or long-term legal guardian physically involved in their lives." I believe the closest D.E.S. Office to apply for food stamps is at 195 W. Irvington near the Roy Laos Transit Center, phone # 741-9751. Good luck to you and your grandson.

Could someone help me out here? My grandson (18) is going to Desert View High School. He lives in an apartment not too far away, he walks to school. The parents just ended up in jail, and he is by himself. Does anyone know whom I could contact so he could get food stamps or any kind of help?
I live in Southern Arizona and am not able to go very far, since I'm hooked up to an oxygen tank.
Any help and information would be appreciated.
Sincerely
Heidi

Carolyn-
Thanks for saying that, but I really did benefit more than the kids. My best friend always tells me if I was rich I'd be broke. (she knows I'd give it away) I'm just a wimp when it comes to kids, animals and the elderly. It drives me insane that they are the weekest amongst us, therefore they always get victimized. It really breaks my heart.

You have also come across as a sensitive, caring person as well.

Azmouse, you sound like a wonderful, giving person to help homeless children. And yes, it is not their fault that they are on the streets. A friend of mine used to work with homeless families in Boston and he burned out from all the heart ache he witnessed. The current bad economy and the growing # of foreclosures is going to hurt families a lot.

For anyone who isn't sympathetic towards the homeless, you have to be heartbroken for the children who are homeless. Children are always the victims of someone's bad choices, abuse, etc. Unfortunately right now, many of these children are now coming from hard working parents who've lost their jobs and homes.
I've had children who were homeless, that my kids were friends with from school, come and live with me. While they were here, I had legal guardianship over them for school and medical reasons. One boy lived with us from the time he was ten, till he graduated from high school. (his Mom was a gang member and drug addict) I love him like my own children, and he spends every Mother's Day with me.
If you help a child in need, YOU get way more out of it than they do.

Another great way to help out homeless children and teens is to go to your neighborhood schools; elementary, middle and high school.
I took it upon myself to do this. Every year, I cruise my neighborhood collecting gently used clothing for the kids in my neighborhood schools. There are many homeless children in Tucson going to school with only one outfit to wear. Think of all the stuff in your drawers and closets that have just been hanging there not getting used. You could make a huge difference by just giving one child a second outfit or another pair of tennis shoes you don't like any more.
