Mobile Meals Turns 40 this yearby Carolyn Classen on Jan. 05, 2010, under Life, Politics
“Mobile Meals helps preserve the health, dignity, and independence of homebound adults by delivering special diet meals”…to over 205 clients daily in Tucson.
They are celebrating their 40th year of service in 2010, and started in a church basement and have now expanded to meals being prepared by 8 different hospitals or health care facilities.
Providing two meals daily to the homebound allows them to “live at home, sleep in their own bed, and maintain the dignity and respect they deserve” (from their Fall 2009 newsletter Mobile Meals News).
They always need more volunteers to deliver meals and to interview new clients. These volunteers are passionate, caring individuals aptly characterized as “driven to deliver.”
I used to help with such a program delivering meals in Hilo, Hawaii. For many of those elderly/disabled clients, that one Mobiles meal was their only food for the day.
