This would be a great chance to meet all 4 Republican CD 8 U.S. House candidates facing off in the Arizona primary on August 24. The winner will be challenging incumbent Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the General Election.

About 600 people attended this “debate” tonight at Ironwood Ridge High School auditorium, and the questions asked covered immigration, the economy, health care, political strategy, war & security, the constitution, etc.  However, the format was confusing & unfair to the candidates, as the 3 panelists asked different questions of each candidate, not allowing all to answer the same question.  Thus,  the audience was left without a clear idea of all four candidates’ positions on any issue (i.e. Paton is against Rosemont Mine, and Goss is for it, but Kelly and Miller weren’t asked that question.)   An informal paper vote of who won the debate was taken by the audience and the results will be posted tonight at http://www.nwrepublicans.com, and the “people’s choice winner” will be on “Wake Up Tucson” ( 1030 AM radio)  show tomorrow at 6:15 a.m.

By the People: Election 2010 – Debate In The Desert Voting Results: Jesse Kelly 51.8%; Jonathan Paton 20%; Andy Goss 16.9%; and Brian Miller 11.3%.   This is somewhat surprising results from last night’s straw poll, due to Paton’s stature as a politician in LD 30.  Listen to Kelly this morning on the radio.

Not surprising to me – I predicted it.
    As I explained:
And may the biggest white male christian redneck win – judging solely from their names, I would give it to Jesse Kelley. “Jonathan” sounds elitist and effete, don’t you think ?

Thanks for the “tip” tiponeill.  I did see your comment under the press release last week.  Seeing all four candidates debate last night was very interesting, and this will be quite a race to August 24.  In Kelly’s bio (handout) he says that “The reason we are so great is that we were founded on the belief that each and every individual is granted his or her rights by God and government should not infringe upon those rights.”

  • tiponeill

each and every individual is granted his or her rights by God
I’m pretty sure that it didn’t say “him or her” – as I recall history we were founded on the belief that it was white christian males only that were granted equal rights.

The room was definitely loaded with Jesse supporters.  I had even heard they came on a bus.  So I challenge the validity of any vote at the face-off.  As for the candidates:  Paton – most experience and easiest to find fault in as he has served and actually has done something.  He is a strong speaker and was prepared.  Kelley – Very interesting speaker (maybe if this doesn’t work for him he could do motivational speaking or hire out as a male cheer leader).  I’m not convinced he is for real!  Every response ends with the Star Spangled Banner and fireworks.  Miller – Sounds like a very smart person and a constitutionalists.  His delivery was a little muddled at times but his message is solid.  He is VERY conservative.  Could be good.  Goss – Do you remember “Davy Crockett Goes To Washington” the Disney movie?  An honest heart, real passion, just a good guy trying to make a difference.  I like the guy!
The winner in my book was John Paton.  I like to go to new restaurants and try something different, but more times than not, I’m disappointed and wish I’d gone back to my favorite, dependable place to eat.  That’s how I feel about these guys.
One more – Where are the gals in this race?  We need a conservative, solid thinking, young female.

Thank you Konki for your observations on last night’s debate, and assessment of these 4 candidates for U.S. House.  No Republican woman is running at this time as far as I know in CD 8.
