Tucson’s 16th Annual Earth Day Festival and Parade will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Reid Park. The theme for the 2010 Festival is “All Species Deserve a Place on Earth!” All species great and small – insects, plants and animals – the Earth needs them all!

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with 10:00 a.m. Earth Day Parade
Place: Reid Park, DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center, east side of Country Club, north of 22nd St.

Information below from their press release: “Exhibits related to the environment will include “hands-on” activities for children and provide information on environmental products, water conservation/water quality, household hazardous waste, wildlife, nature preserves and much more!

At 10:00 a.m. the unique and colorful parade will include participants dressed up as plants, animals, and insects, and environmentally themed floats. Batucaxe, high energy drum and dance group will lead the All Species Procession as part of the Earth Day Parade!

After the parade, watch as local middle school students test their design and construction skills in a model solar electric race car competition. Then change gears from model cars to full-size vehicles at the Alternate Fuel Vehicle Show. Check out vehicles that run on alternate fuels such as biodiesel, compressed natural gas, electric, ethanol, propane and even waste vegetable oil. Ask the experts how you can start using an alternate fuel in your vehicle to keep the air clean for all species.

Animals love the earth and deserve a place on earth too! So, ride your bike to the Earth Day Festival and for those riding their bikes (with a helmet) get free admission to the Reid Park Zoo by showing your bike safety helmet.”

Hundreds of people there right now at this festival, very family oriented for kids.  Lots of environment friendly booths too.  I spoke with 8 year old Preston who attends Castle Hill Elem. School and he is looking forward to picking up litter on Earth Day!  Wow, he’s got the right values already.  The model solar car competition was exciting to watch too.  Festivities continue to 3 p.m. today.

As the coordinator along with 25 committee members, we all want to thank the estimated 3,500 visitors to the festival this year.  I hope everyone got to pet a Beagle, eat Kettle Korn, and all the other goodies.  But most of all I thank all of our 70+ exhibitors.  It was a beautiful day.

Thanks flo for commenting.  It was a terrific festival and I was expecially impressed by the large number of children who are learning to care for our Planet Earth.  Great job.

What a great event this was!  I was there representing REI and was so excited to see so many kids in Tucson who were eager to learn how they can care for our planet!  And so many of them already knew a lot!  We played a recycle game at our booth and the response was amazing! Thanks to everyone who helped make this so successful.

I am proud to have been involved with organizing this event for 13 of the 16 years. It just keeps getting better with the addition of things like the solar competition, alternative fuel vehicles and a bike valet! Committee members work hard for months to prepare for this one day and then they work from 6 to 4 that day! Many thanks to them and our loyal sponsors.

Thanks to both of you Shannon and Pamela, for your comments about how great Earth Day 2010 was.  Please continue your environmental work into the future, for the sake of our children and their children.
