College educational levels of Tucson Mayor/Council

by on Apr. 26, 2010, under Education, Life, Politics

Someone asked me about the college educational levels of the Mayor & five current City Council members, so here’s the results of my research:

Mayor Bob Walkup: B.S. from Iowa State, in Industrial EngineeringCity of Tucson logo

Ward 1 Regina Romero: B.A. from U of A in Communication

Ward 2 vacant *

Ward 3 Karin Uhlich: B.A. from Michigan State in Social work

Ward 4 Shirley Scott: M.A. from U. of Cincinnati (Germanic Languages & Literature), B.A. from Drew University (NJ) in German

Ward 5 Richard Fimbres: M.A. from Northern Arizona University (Educational Leadership), B.S. from U of A (Public Administration), two A.A. degrees from Pima Community College (Law Enforcement, Corrections)

Ward 6 Steve Kozachik: M.Ed from U of A (Higher Education Management), B.A. from U of A (Public Administration)

These may be useful degrees to fulfill their jobs on the City Council, especially new Councilmembers Fimbres’ and Kozachik’s degrees in public administration. I didn’t realize that three on the Council have their Master’s degrees as well.

* 5/4/10 Update: Ward 2 Paul Cunningham: M.S.W. from ASU, B.A. from U of A in History

    German?

    • Carolyn Classen

German is not an easy language to learn, having tried to do it myself, being married to a Native German.  And Shirley got her Master’s in it as well.

      • Mark B. Evans

No argument here. I took it for two years. Meine Deutsch ist schlect. Sehr schlect (oder ist es “ganz schlect?).

I’m just trying to figure out how it helps her govern.

        • Carolyn Classen

Well, Shirley is in her 4th term on the Council so she’s obviously popular and competent, to be re-elected a few times. I’ll ask her sometime about her German background.

I think a degree in social work would be a big help, too.  No teachers?  Two administrators?  Teachers in the trenches will tell you that the biggest problems are caused by the administrators.
I recall hearing that Ms Scott was born in Germany.  That would be a good reason to pursue degrees in German.
I’d like to know when these folks obtained these degrees.  Times and methods change.  Have they kept up to date in their fields?  except German.  That probably hasn’t changed much.

    • Carolyn Classen

Kane o, I don’t know which country Councilmember Scott was born in but I have contacted the Ward 4 office for that information. She did talk about how proud she is to be a naturalized U.S. Citizen last night. As for dates when the Mayor/Council got their college  degrees, I’ll have to refer you to their respective websites, or their Council offices.   Thanks for commenting.

  • Andy Squire

Dear Kane o, Council Member Scott was born in Toronto Canada.  She was a teacher of German at the college level out of state and at Pima Community College.  She also ran a business, Scott Supply, with her husband, Joe Scott,  for many years here in Tucson and that business is now run by their son. Thank you for your inquiry and thank you Carolyn for letting us know about this request. Andy Squire, Aide to Council Member Scott

    • Carolyn Classen

Thanks for the information Andy about Councilmember Shirley Scott.  As for Mark’s inquiry above, my husband (University Distinguished Professor in German Studies) had this to say:
“the study of a foreign language trained her (Shirley) to think
critically, to take other sides into consideration, and to be culturally
      sensitive.”
