Clean Elections debate online tonight: Governor Brewer vs. Gist vs. Goddard vs. Hess

by on Sep. 01, 2010, under Life, Politics

Governor Jan Brewer (Republician) and Gubernatorial candidate Attorney General Terry Goddard (Democrat) will debate for one hour tonight September 1st in Phoenix, which will be telecast on Horizon KAET Channel 8. Libertarian candidate Barry Hess (who has run for this seat before in 2002 and 2006), and Green Party candidate Larry Gist are expected to participate in the debate as well. Ted Simons, who moderated most of the Primary election debates for the Arizona Citizens Clean Election Commission, will be moderating tonight.

And I just learned that KUAT Channel 6 in Tucson will be telecasting this debate also at 7 to 8 p.m.

The online video (for those who miss this telecast tonight), can be accessed within 72 hours at the Clean elections website (click here). The General Election will be on November 2nd.

UPDATE: This debate video is online now at www.azpbs.org/vote2010. The Governor joked that she was happy to be at the debate with “Larry, Barry, and Terry.” I guess it’s like saying this debate was “3 Men and a Lady.”

Governor Jan Brewer served on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, in the Arizona legislature (State House & Senate) and was elected Secretary of State in 2003. She was appointed to the Office of Governor in January, 2009 when then-Governor Janet Napolitano took the job as Head of Homeland Security. Brewer grew up in California and Nevada, and has a degree (certificate?) from Glendale Community College. Her website is: www.janbrewer.com

AG Terry Goddard is an Arizona native (born in Tucson), educated at Harvard College, with his law degree from ASU. He served as Mayor of Phoenix for 4 terms, and was elected Attorney General in 2003. He ran for Governor before in 1990 and 1994, and his father Samuel Goddard Jr. was Governor for 2 years (1965 to 1967). His website is: www.terrygoddard.com.

Larry Gist, Green Party candidate, is a local Arizonan from Yuma and a graduate of Arizona Western College and ASU. He has been in the mortgage banking business and his campaign info says he “worked for one session for state legislature”. His website is: www.gist4governor.com.

Libertarian Barry Hess, who grew up in Florida, Ohio and New Hampshire, and a graduate of Fordham University (New York), has been the Libertarian Party nominee for Arizona Governor (twice) and U.S. Senate before. He is an investor and his website is: www.hessforgovernor.com.

Catch it while you can, this is the only debate Brewer has agreed to, so almost certainly the first and last. Our Governor is no fool, she knows trying to sound intelligent and informed on the issues is not her strong suit.

  • Carolyn Classen

Right cochisecitizen, this may be the only debate between these 4 candidates.  Goddard challenged her to 6 debates prior to the primary election, and this is the only one she is required to participate in as a “clean” elections candidate.

Do you realize how annoying it is for you to post in Cholla’s dairy – where liberals such as myself cannot comment or respond ?
The Citizen has policies which allow conservative bloggers to censor liberal ones, and that distorts it’s reportage.
Your compliance in this scheme is not helpful.
I would ask that if you feel the need to reply to a cholla post – or a Ft. Buckley post – you do so in your own diary where the rest of us lesser souls can respond.

Tiponeill, I did not  realize you were not allowed to comment under The Cholla Jump’s blogsite, but I had to respond to his article about that NAACP forum which I reported on last night.  If I copy my comment under my own posts, it wouldn’t make much sense I’m afraid.   But feel free to comment under my blogsite, as I rarely censor anyone unless they use hate speech or are vulgar/obscene, or threaten anyone.

It is true Carolyn, Fort Buckley is an intellectual Fort Knox.  Only their gold is allowed in. If they do not censor they simply delete anything that is not congruent with their advocacy essays or any non-sequitirs.  Rational rhetoric is not the game. I would call it the Bloggers Oligarchy. I am like you, all the voices are all of America. Let em roll. No reason to not to, unless you are racked with fear or  promulgating it.

Yep, Cholla and Buckley censor their comments. They don’t like dissent (they probably give us TC bloggers a pass).

Anyone is free to post their thoughts on my blogs… call me a liar, a wetback, an illegal, or even worse, call me a Republican (ick!).  I’ll allow it as long as the automatic profanity censor doesn’t filter it out. No spam either :)

My thoughts are that if anyone wants to disagree, then I should be able to refute them, and if I can’t, then I need to find out why or change my views…

If I copy my comment under my own posts, it wouldn’t make much sense I’m afraid.
While it may not make much sense, others of us are forced to do exactly that because of Cholla’s censorship. I cannot comment on or respond to you if you post a comment in Cholla’s blog, and am forced to respond in YOUR blog .
Their censorship has consequences that spread beyond their personal walls and affect the entire discourse on TC.com and I would hope that you wouldn’t contribute to it, when you are one of the elite with a blog of your own and free speech.

        • Carolyn Classen

Well, obviously there is a different definition of  “freedom of speech” online here.  I hear that 3 Sonorans’ comments in the Arizona Daily Star are being deleted while not objectionable.  Sigh.  We have come a long way since 1775.  Thanks for all your comments, Mike, David & Tiponeill.

Does Governor Brewer have a degree from Glendale Community College? Other sources claim she was in a certificate program.

    Just asking.

    • Carolyn Classen

What type of certificate program?  She does not have college bio data on her campaign website nor her official Gubernatorial website, so I got that info from Wikipedia (linked).  Let me know if you find out anything else as I’ve been searching for it. I read somewhere that she was a “certified radiological technologist” but not sure if that program is still being offered at Glendale. Thanks.

      • http://pointmantucson.yuku.com/ mike_brewer

Rumor has it from pals in Phoenix that she is a beauty school drop out.

        • Carolyn Classen

Well, I’ve sent an email inquiry about her college days to her Gubernatorial campaign website, and called them as well.  Let’s see if anyone responds, but I did hear on the John C. Scott radio talk show (KJLL) an interview by her earlier this year.  She did say something like being a “radiology technician”, before she entered politics.

Governor Brewer is one tough cookie. I’m sure she’ll do well with the debate.

    • Carolyn Classen

Well, the debate was held on September 1 and I suggest you view the links above of the actual debate.  Governor Brewer had some problems (lapses of time) during that CCEC debate in Phoenix, and did not answer Terry Goddard’s question about the proof of the alleged beheadings in the AZ desert (statements which  she has now recanted).

Did you know that there are only 4,585 registered Greens in Arizona?
