Jonathan Rothschild’s first fundraiser for Mayor a success

by on Dec. 08, 2010, under Life, Politics

More than 150 business & professional leaders attended last night’s kick off fundraiser at Etherton Gallery, 135 S. 6th Avenue in downtown Tucson to meet possible Mayoral candidate Jonathan Rothschild, a Tucson attorney with no prior political experience. Rothschild has served as Treasurer or the Pima County Democratic Party and is a partner in his law firm Mesch, Clark & Rothschild.

Terry Etherton, owner of the gallery welcomed the crowd and said that it was “time for a change” and a “new voice.” Then Dr Laura Elias de la Torre (Campaign Chair) spoke of being a 5th generation Tucsonan and that she has been “waiting for someone to bring her home back to her.” She said she has confidence that Jonathan “understands Tucson from his heart.”

Then the potential candidate revealed that over the past 3 months, lots of people have asked him “Why run for Mayor?” He said that the why is tied in to “people and place”, that he wants to move Tucson forward and revitalize it, by utilizing all its resources. He felt confident that he could provide the “vision, hard work, and leadership that Tucson needs.” Jonathan pledged to listen to all people, rich or poor, to tell them where he stands on issues, and then to listen once again, and to take responsibility for decisions.

Finally attorney Elliot Glicksman spoke enthusiastically that knew that Jonathan is a good problem-solver and has been “involved in all aspects of the community.”

Attending tonight (at least during the hour/half I was there) were Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall, former Tucson City Councilmember Chuck Ford, TUSD Governing board member Dr.Mark Stegeman, LD 27 House primary candidate Sami Hamed, aide to Congressman Raul Grijalva. I recognized a lot of attorneys and doctors at this event as well, and many Democratic party activists. For my earlier blog (click here) with a list of other early supporters.

Questions about this exploratory committee can be directed to Jonathan at jr@jonathanformayor.com, website www.jonathanformayor.com. Besides raising money, this committee is already soliciting volunteers for the potential political campaign.

Stay tuned to find out if Jonathan will actually run for Mayor of the City of Tucson.
His final words tonight were that he wanted to bring people together and “restore public trust”, wise words indeed in the wake of the recent Rio Nuevo fiscal audit.

So how would this guy have dealt with the theft of $230,000,000 in the Rio Nuevo boondoggle. Seems like he would be no different in making sure his friends got contracts.

Fraser007, why don’t you ask Jonathan this question directly, as his email is jr@jonathanformayor.com.   Let’s not assume what he would have done since he wasn’t there on the City Council from 1999 to 2009.

      • fraser007

I just did in this blogsite. He needs to tell us that the whole Rio Nuevo is a sham and has done nothing for downtown. We have only two projects that were done. We wasted 230,000,000 dollars.

  • Huh?

You’re making that accusation based on…

    • fraser007

All of the City Council since then except one have drunk from that well. He needs to condemn the entire project to make sure that the public doesnt percieve him as just another Council member who will line the pockets of his friends.

      • Carolyn Classen

The one being Councilmember Cunningham who was only appointed to the Council this past May 2010?  Kozachik and Fimbres came on a year ago after the Nov. 2009 election.

        • fraser007

I stand corrected on Cunningham and Fimbres. But you can understand my frustration on what the Council did (or allowed) to happen with the $230,000,000. Will this Rothschild guy stand tall and proclaim that the past Councils were criminal (or just plain corrupt/stupid) in their actions.

Fraser…buried somewhere in the city charter is a provision whereby a taxpayer who believes money was appropriated illegally can make a demand of the city to restore the funds…and if the city doesn’t act, the taxpayer can then sue the city and if the taxpayer wins and the court rules the money has to be paid back, the taxpayer gets a percentage of the recovery….in fact all governments in the state are subject to provisions like this.

        • fraser007

I just cant see this Rothschild fellow getting elected without taking an open/public stand on the Rio Nuevo Boondoggle. Walkup was an enabler to a den of dopeheads.

    • fraser007

So what did we get for $230,000,000?? Do you know?

Rothschild scheduled to speak on Feb. 7 (update/correction: January 31)  at Democrats of Greater Tucson, high noon.  Will he be announcing his bid for Mayor then?

Rothschild scheduled to speak at Saguaro Eastside Democrats on Jan. 24, New Spirit Lutheran Church, 8701 Old Spanish Trail (NE corner of Camino Seco), 6:30 p.m. Will he be announcing his bid for Mayor then?  Stay tuned.
