In a book titled, “Los Tucsonences” about the founding of Tucson, there is a very telling from a local Mexican parent who was educated at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico and had moved to Tucson with her merchant father. It was a caveat to their children and is as follows; “look out for the uncouth illiterate hooligan anglos from the east. They are without morals and education.”
That was most likely a collection of angry soldiers from the Civil War.

I wish the citizens of my beloved home state
a Christmas and New Year
that is very
merry,
filled with reflection
steeped in love
and human compassion
out of which more and more
Arizonans rise
above their recent
disregard for the lives
of some who reside
within the state’s borders,
coming to realize
that if they matched
the rich natural beauty
of the majestic Sahuaros,
and the colorful painted forest,
and the magnificent Grand Canyon
that hypnotize
the world’s imagination -
they might find ways
to appreciate Arizona’s rich
and majestic
and colorful human diversity
enough to
turn the hateful spirit
that abounds around
and show the world
how best to live in
a land of the free.

That’s what I wish
for the state
where I first breathed air
and pondered
a life’s journey.
