Christina-Taylor Green’s memorial service scheduled

by on Jan. 10, 2011, under Life, Politics

According to the Tucson Sentinel, the memorial service for Christina-Taylor Green will be on Thursday, January 13 at 1 p.m. The 9 year old child was killed on January 8, 2011 at the mass shooting at the Safeway store on Oracle/Ina Roads. Five others were killed and as many as 19 were injured in total.

The funeral Mass will be at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 8560 N. Shannon Rd. in northwest Tucson. Phone (520) 297-7357.

Bishop Gerald Kicanas is expected to preside over the Catholic service.

Green was just elected to the student council at Mesa Verde Elementary School, and apparently had aspirations of becoming a politician, hence her standing in the constituent line to speak to her Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Congressional District 8 on Saturday. The neighbor Susan Hileman who brought Green to that event was shot & injured, & remains hospitalized at UMC.

More information about Christina from the Arizona Daily Star:

Christina Taylor Green was only 9, but the third-grader already was an aspiring politician. Her parents say Christina had just been elected to the student council at Mesa Verde Elementary School and had been interested in politics from a young age. She already had told her parents she wanted to attend Penn State and have a career that involved helping those less fortunate than her. The brown-eyed athletic girl loved to swim with her 11-year-old brother Dallas, her lone sibling. Her mother, Roxanna Green, said Christina also loved animals, singing, dancing and gymnastics. She also was the only girl on her Canyon del Oro Little League baseball team. Her grandfather, former major-league pitcher Dallas Green, managed the 1980 world champion Philadelphia Phillies. Christina’s father, John Green, is a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Christina was born on the tragic day of Sept. 11, 2001.

Rest in peace young Christina. Heartfelt condolences to the Green family.

It’s my understanding that the traveling freakshow and circus collectively called the Westboro Baptist Church will be picketing at some, if not all, of the funerals from this weekend’s tragedy. I suggest that you treat them with the same amount of dignity they recieved recently in McAlester, Oklahoma when they decided to drop into town. As the circus was out performing, their vehicles mysteriously ended up with flat tires. No local shops would repair the flats and they ended up having to be escorted by police to a Wal-Mart (I hate that place!) to get new tires http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=11&articleid=20101114_11_A12_CUTLIN105145&archive=yes. I highly recommend they be welcomed to your fine city as they were to ours. Don’t let them ruin her parents’ last moment with their daughter.

I love it! Although slashing the tires may be going a little too far, I do have my handy tool for removing the stem in the air valve.

Over the time I have been posting on TC you and I have rarely if ever agree. But thats a democracy. I agree COPMPLETELY with your comment.
I would hope that Tucson would send these nutjobs from Kansas a clear message.

That sounds so well deserved!   Everyone stand quietly with your backs turned to them wherever they turn up here in Tucson.  Show them they are not worth any attention.    Everyone stay above them?  They are cruel and inhuman.   I hope the media totally ignores them because this is why they do what they do.

  • Hoosier Woman

We dont know if the Westboro Baptists are going to be there or not but on Facebook there is a group of people already trying to form a human blockade to keep Westboro from picketing.  If I was in Tucson I would be there to block them.

May I suggest another way. When they show up with their signs I would hope that hundreds and hundreds of our citizens surround them and press their bodies so close that they cannot move. Hide them in a sea of humanity that will stand up to their crazyness. Who could they sue. (I hear that they sue people who oppose them with lawsuits.)
      Just a thought.

Thanks Okie and Hoosier Women for your information about the Westboro Baptist Church and counter measures to take in case they show up.

  • BJAlexandria

Thank you for the link, Hoosier Woman!  I specifically googled info about this service so I could get info about blocking the Westboro people.  I’m going to post it on Facebook.

The Arizona Legislature just unaminously passed an emergency bill today to prevent Fred Phelps and his band of hatemongers from picketing funerals here. Gov. Jan Brewer was to sign it tonight and probably has done so already.
After the bad reputation they established, it’s quite gratifying to know that our legislature is capable of accomplishing something we can be proud of. For that, they deserve credit.

Thanks for the info Alohapuna.  Hopefully this will be done in time for Christina’s memorial service on Thursday.

My heart goes out to the Green family. What that punk did to such a beautiful girl broke my heart. I have a beautiful little girl the very same age as Christina-Taylor.  There is responsiblity taken for deeds, and misuse of a deadly weapon burns me. I extend a warm and caring hand to John and Roxanna Green. I am from Defiance, Ohio and John might have discovered pitcher Chad Billingsley, or know who did. GO DODGERS!!!!!!  My daughter Rachel feels for Christina-Taylor and so does another little girl born in 2001 I know, Angela Shaffer of Columbus, Ohio. Angela lights candles in her Catholic church for Christina-Taylor.

Jared Loughner will certainly face doom

Thanks so much Todd for your comments.  The heartfelt grief towards the Green family has been overwhelming (so I hear) and many, many donations have been made to the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona in Christina’s memory, one of the reasons I posted this blog – to help the Green family.    Please check out the photo galleries I’ve posted of the 3 memorials in town, all very touching sites.  (I went to water plants at the district office one today and also fixed some of the fallen candles & messages.)  And I’m still so sad about Gabe Zimmerman, whom I knew.

Tragedy. This is really sad. I don’t know what to say. Rest in peace Christina.
