Jennifer Rawson

Political newcomer Republican Jennifer Rawson has filed with the Tucson City Clerk to run for the Ward 2 Council seat, which is up for election this year.

She self-described herself as a person who has “performed many jobs-weeded potato fields, wash walls, been a nanny, a buyer, an office manager, an accounting manager, a Food and beverage manager, Chef, Ranch wife and mother.”

She goes on in an email that “I have negotiated contracts, and prepared from the ground up budgets. I know how to balance a budget and how to live with-in one. I am the mother of two and the grandmother of five great boys”.

Rawson will be officially announcing her candidacy in front of the Ward 2 Council office on Thursday, April 7 at 3 p.m., which will be a time to learn more about this candidate. The Council office is at 7575 E. Speedway, east of Kolb Road.

Photo unavailable at press time (Sunday 4/3/11), but I will upload one later should I receive one from this candidate before Thursday. Photo added: 4/7/11.

Democrat Paul Cunningham was appointed to this Council seat last May, 2010 (click here for my earlier blog). He was a Pima County juvenile probation officer prior to becoming a City Councilman.

Paul is the son of George Cunningham, former Democratic State Senator (and House Rep.) and financial adviser in the cabinet of two Governors of the State of Arizona (Chief of Staff for Governor Mofford and Deputy Chief of Staff for Finance & Budget under Governor Napolitano).

Just received Jennifer’s photo. Reminder- she’s announcing today at 3 p.m. at Ward 2 office.

Rawson announced her bid today saying that she was a “better alternative” than the current Councilman who was “appointed because of his family.”  She is not pleased with the way the City is going, wants a “common sense approach”, more advocacy for businesses, fewer taxes, and accountability for Rio Nuevo.  She said she once managed a $5 million business, and praised current Ward 6 Councilman Kozachik (also a Republican).

Fewer taxes?! Shocking. What a bold vision for our future. I wonder how that’s going to work when we build the cross-town freeway she proposed at her announcement? I guess since we won’t be paying for buses ever again we’ll have the money… oh yeah, she wants to privatize SunTran. That’ll work out well for the tens of thousands of low-income workers who rely on public transportation daily.

She should ask her “friend” Steve K about the difference between running as a tea party candidate and actually having to govern as one. Fortunately for the people of Tucson she probably won’t have to worry about the latter. If the rest of her campaign is as inarticulate and bumbling as her announcement speech was she won’t qualify for the ballot.

No more free rides for poor people….AWESOME! Crosstown freeway I’m not a fan of. If I wanted to live in Phoenix I’d move up there.
