I ride the Sun Tran bus to and from downtown, and therefore am able to sit next to students (of all ages), government workers, the unemployed, children, and of course, people of all colors. It’s also a terrific way to escape the heat of walking around sprawling Tucson, and looking for a place to park your car for a fee. And taking public transportation is also environmentally friendly and saves on gas emissions of not driving your car/truck. Plus the rising cost of gasoline has increased bus ridership.
In 1969, the City of Tucson agreed to assume control of Tucson Rapid Transit’s struggling system. Under the city’s direction, public transit began to flourish. Ridership increased, new buses were purchased and service rapidly improved. In 1975, a contest was held and the system was renamed Sun Tran. Today, Sun Tran operates 40 fixed routes with a fleet of 240 coaches. The award-winning system remains on the cutting edge of technology as it has since the beginning.
Ride Sun Tran.
