I was just about to write a post about this forum, but thought I would check the other blog posts first. Thanks for posting, Carolyn. The Republicans tried to pass a flat tax in 2011 by dubbing it the “Fair Tax”. Flat taxes are anything but fair.

Most likely, as is usually the case, those who would benefit the most (those who would be the most adversely affected) by learning what the flat tax is really about will not take make the effort to attend.

About 200 people attended this forum tonight. The panel above was joined by Rev. Grady Scott from Grace Temple Baptist Church. Former Republican LD 28 Senate candidate Greg Krino spoke in favor of states that had flat taxes or no income taxes (16 he said in total).  Also attending tonight were former Mayor George Miller, former candidates Andrea Dalessandro (LD 30) and Donna Branch-Gilby (Pima County Supervisor).   The panelists all agreed that average tax paid by people earning less than $100 K would increase, and would decrease for those making more than $100 K.

Dr. Charney pointed out that a part of economic theory is ability to pay which tends to be ignored these days. Proponents of a flat tax don’t seem to be concerned about that at all. If you don’t have to deal with it, I suppose it’s hard to imagine having to pinch pennies to get by. Ignorance is bliss!
