The new film from controversial director Lars Von Trier, starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Stellan Skarsgård, Udo Kier and Kiefer Sutherland!

WINNER! Best Actress, Kirsten Dunst / 2011 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

In this visually ravishing and emotionally charged film about the end of the world, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and brother-in-law John (Kiefer Sutherland). Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth…

Beautiful, profound and spectacularly operatic, MELANCHOLIA is a unique psychological disaster film from highly acclaimed (and highly controversial) director Lars von Trier (Antichrist, Dancer in the Dark).

Melancholy is the word for this film which I just viewed w/ 3 women friends.  The family at the wedding is totally dysfunctional, without a lot of love.  However, as the planet Melancholia approaches, the characters need to decide what is important in life, and how to face death, with courage.  And whom to spend their last moments with.  The movie is visually stunning, with haunting music.

I’m looking forward to it’s release on DVD – I’ve heard terrific things but I prefer to watch movies in the comfort of my home.

Actually this movie is good on the big screen, as you watch the alien planet approaching Earth.  Not sure when it will be released on DVD.  It’s showing daily at the Loft, 1, 4 and 7 p.m. this week.
