Disastrous . I am 100 % disabled veteran and I receive my medications from the VA by postal delivery. I don’t drive and I’ m 82. what’s Obama trying to do… Start another war, this tine with Iran…. Just to please the Neocons?

Yes, the USPS is an icon. Where I grew up in rural Hawaii there was no home delivery (and still isn’t any), we had to walk or drive to the post office to get our mail. Now the USPS is losing billions/year, so they need to restructure their operations. Let’s see what happens to the Tucson processing plant, but do send in your comments via 1st class mail.

The USPS definately should be saved, I agree. In these rapidly changing times and advancements in technology, like so many other businesses, the Post Office must look for innovative ways to stay in business and look for new and possibly different services to provide. Unfortunately, it’s the reality of today.

Rep. Grijava mentioned 3 pieces of federal legislation that may help the situation: H.R.3591, H.R. 2956, and H.R. 1262. He also said we need to save this “American icon”, the USPS.

Just think – Tucson can’t even make the claim to being a “city” if it has to have it’s mail handled in Phoenix.

Over 500 people packed Leo Rich Theater tonight to oppose this plan which would reduce overnight delivery to 2-3 day delivery & lose the Tucson postmark (unless you take it in for a hand stamp). Several politicians spoke of this change as “devastating” including Mayor Rothschild, Congressman Raul Grijalva, Ron Barber for Congresswoman Giffords, Councilmember Kozachik, Supervisor Richard Elias, 2 former Tucson Postmasters and several postal workers. USPS spokesman said that because first class mail has decreased so much since 2006, the current 487 U.S. processing centers need to be reduced to less than 200, saving $47 million by closing the Tucson center. But the speakers (and audience) were concerned about the delay in service in Southern Arizona & loss of 300 jobs. Councilmembers Fimbres & Cunningham were present, along w/ State Reps.Bruce Wheeler & Macario Saldate. Comments are due by January 12, with no change before 5/12/12. About 60 Occupy Tucson & postal workers marched through downtown prior to the hearing.

I hate that – different strokes. I’ve had experience with banks paying bills and then charging overdraft fees for instance.

And think of how much more difficult it would be for me to change banks now if I had to change all those accounts

You might want to consider doing banking direct debit like many of us. We only use postal mail now for greeting cards & packages, some business mail/bills.
