Women’s Commission to Hold Free Presentation on HPV & Cervical Cancer 1/19/2012

Dr. Francisco Garcia, MD, MPH, FACOG, director of the University of Arizona Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, will present a free one hour seminar from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 on current information on HPV (the human papiloma virus which causes cervical cancer) and on its prevention at the Pima County / Tucson Women’s Commission, 240 N. Court Ave. Downtown Tucson.

As one of the leading international experts in cervical cancer, he will discuss screening guidelines, the prophylactic HPV vaccines and health disparities related to cervical cancer, local efforts to reduce health disparities. In the U.S. in 2011, it is estimated that there will be 12,710 new cases of cervical cancer and 4,290 deaths. Cervical cancer is an important women’s health problem in developing countries killing some 200,000 women each year. It is the third most common cancer overall and the leading cause of death each year from cancer in developing countries.

At least 370,000 new cases are identified each year; 80 percent are in developing countries according to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition in 2011. Due to the availability of screening, treatment and resources in industrialized countries, cervical cancer disproportionately affects underserved populations in the U.S. and developing countries. Globally, 80 to 85 percent of deaths occur in low-income or middle-income countries according to the National Cancer Institute (2011.)
