Photos of 1st Iditarod race in Tucson

by on Apr. 01, 2012, under Health, Life

Four brave teams entered the inaugural Great Tucson Iditarod race today, April Fool’s Day in Tucson, under bright sunny skies, a bit of wind, at about 78 degrees F. I was there to witness some of these teams check in at the starting line at Bentley’s House of Coffee & Tea at Nob Hill (1730 E. Speedway, west of Campbell).

The 4 teams that competed for $100 prizes (in order at check in):

1) “3 Blind Mice” (Rena Ikeda, Wendy Martin, Ben Young, Ruben Moreno, and child Sabin Enos -riding in the cart). Ruben is a local artist whom I’ve blogged about before (click here). “Farmer’s wife” Rena (photo below) had a large carving knife to cut off the 3 blind mice’s tails as in the nursery rhyme.

2) “The Dive Bar” (Tesa Mayorga, Mari Galup, Mamta Popat, Jessica Kranz, Elva Dela Torre, all taking turns riding in the shopping cart). They even had snorkeling (dive?) equipment attached, along w/ a bar for drinks/cocktails.

3) “Divinity by Design” (Christina Russell, Angelica Russell-Johnson, Enid Moore-Cranshaw, Kimiko Crawley (in the cart), Tileka Russell). This family team name was derived from their websites –Tileka website’s: www.Design-Amazing.com, and Enid’s: www.divinitysalonaz.com.

4) “Nessie & the Cryptids” (Sarah Trainor as “Jackalope”, Ben Harper as “Trunko”, and Chris Perez as “Amazing Bat Boy”). Probably the most unusual entry of legendary land & sea creatures.

I bicycled along the route from Bentley’s Coffee shop down to the UA Mall on University Blvd. and over to Time Market, where I witnessed team # 3 “Divinity by Design” overtake team #2 “The Dive Bar”.

According to organizer David Aguirre here’s the order of the teams as they came in at the Food Truck Roundup finish line: 1) “Divinity by Design” 2) “3 Blind Mice” 3) “The Dive Bar” and 4) “Nessie & the Cryptids”. Monetary awards were presented at 5:30 p.m. today to all 4 teams at the Food Truck event near Benjamin Plumbing.

Congratulations to Dinnerware Artspace director David Aguirre for creating this 1st time event in Tucson. And congratulations to the 4 teams of enthusiastic, hardy entrants for finishing the race & for their creativity in designing their shopping carts.

Sorry to say this was a truly irresponsible and dumb event!  Tucson is innundated with abandoned shopping carts as a community we should be working towards cleaning them up not spreading them around.  As a matter of fact it is a violation of Arizona Law to take a shopping cart off the premises of a business.  Please see ARS

    44-1799.32. Prohibition
of certain shopping cart activity; applicability; consent; presumption

    A. A person shall not do any
of the following with the intent to temporarily or permanently deprive the
owner or retailer of possession of a shopping cart, if the shopping cart has a
permanently affixed sign as provided in subsection B:

    1. Remove a shopping cart
from the premises or parking area of a retail establishment.

    2. Be in possession of any
shopping cart that has been removed from the premises or parking area of a retail
    establishment.

    3. Be in possession of any
shopping cart with the serial numbers removed, obliterated or altered.

    4. Leave or abandon a
shopping cart at a location other than the premises or parking area of the
    retail establishment.

    5. Alter, convert or tamper
with a shopping cart, remove any part or portion of a shopping cart or remove,
obliterate or alter serial numbers on a shopping cart.

    6. Be in possession of any
shopping cart while that cart is not located on the premises or parking lot of
    a retail establishment.

That A.R.S. statute seems to apply only to carts with a “permanently affixed sign” on them, but the carts in this race had no signs on them and were probably abandoned ones. Also the law outlaws any activity of theft (intent to deprive the retail owner of possession…) of these shopping carts, which I don’t think the teams participated in.

The write-up on the Food Truck Truck Roundup website by Dinnerware Artspace organizer David Aguirre states:  “Abandoned Shopping Cart Rescue:Abandoned shopping carts sometimes lose their way and end up in the
Santa Cruz or the Rillito dry river beds. Help them find their way home,
with a shopping cart rescue. But first, bring them back to life at the
Iditarod. Leave the shopping cart at the Food Truck Roundup, where they
will be picked up and returned finally to their rightful homes. You’ve
      done a great environmental service.”(http://www.tucsonfoodtruckroundup.com/Tucson_Iditarod.html)

Hmmm so the carts had no signs afixed..but at the end of the race they were returned to their rightful homes? thats a neat trick ..sort of like the original suggestion of where to get the carts..a wink wink keep it legal but look next to shopping centers..Guess we will never know where they came from or where they went…and they will end up in Santa Cruz..lets face it – it was a dopey idea, foolishly aping what’s done in other locations (google Iditarod shopping cart race and see how cliche this event is)..but the larger point is this – Tucson has so many issues with graffiti, weeds in the median, abandoned buildings..and yes abandoned shopping carts..this was one event that missed the mark at bringing people together to do something positive for our community..

I am sorry to say this was a truly dumb and irresponsible event.  Tucson is innundated with abandoned shopping carts! its another form of urban blight we should be working to clean up not celebrating.  In fact it is illegal to take a shopping cart off of a stores Premises.
