Hmmm so the carts had no signs afixed..but at the end of the race they were returned to their rightful homes? thats a neat trick ..sort of like the original suggestion of where to get the carts..a wink wink keep it legal but look next to shopping centers..Guess we will never know where they came from or where they went...and they will end up in Santa Cruz..lets face it - it was a dopey idea, foolishly aping what's done in other locations (google Iditarod shopping cart race and see how cliche this event is)..but the larger point is this - Tucson has so many issues with graffiti, weeds in the median, abandoned buildings..and yes abandoned shopping carts..this was one event that missed the mark at bringing people together to do something positive for our community..

That A.R.S. statute seems to apply only to carts with a "permanently affixed sign" on them, but the carts in this race had no signs on them and were probably abandoned ones. Also the law outlaws any activity of theft (intent to deprive the retail owner of possession...) of these shopping carts, which I don't think the teams participated in.

The write-up on the Food Truck Truck Roundup website by Dinnerware Artspace organizer David Aguirre states: "Abandoned Shopping Cart Rescue:Abandoned shopping carts sometimes lose their way and end up in the
Santa Cruz or the Rillito dry river beds. Help them find their way home,
with a shopping cart rescue. But first, bring them back to life at the
Iditarod. Leave the shopping cart at the Food Truck Roundup, where they
will be picked up and returned finally to their rightful homes. You've
done a great environmental service."(http://www.tucsonfoodtruckroundup.com/Tucson_Iditarod.html)

Sorry to say this was a truly irresponsible and dumb event! Tucson is innundated with abandoned shopping carts as a community we should be working towards cleaning them up not spreading them around. As a matter of fact it is a violation of Arizona Law to take a shopping cart off the premises of a business. Please see ARS
