10 Things I like about midtown Tucson

by on Sep. 21, 2012, under Arts, Health, Life

I recently read an article in the AZ Daily Star “East side has so much to offer” by regional editor Tiffany Kjos.

So I started pondering about what I liked about central/midtown Tucson, where we have lived (two apartments, one home) for over 25 years. So here’s my informal list of 10 things I like about Midtown. Click on the blue hyperlinks if you are new to Tucson and need more information.

1. Himmel Park (south of Speedway, between Tucson Blvd. & Treat Avenue), has tennis courts recently resurfaced, an open air pool now open again for the summer, lots of grass, playing fields, an outdoor grass amphitheater for plays/concerts. A Shakespeare in the park performance of “The Taming of the Shrew” is performing there opening tonight, for three weekends at 7 p.m. $5 suggested donation, to benefit El Rio Theatre Project.

2. Himmel Park Branch Library, oldest branch library of Pima County (built in 1961), children’s storytime, teen activities, Senior Games (including mahjong), films & lectures, lots more, even books to borrow.

3. Reid Park at NE corner of E. 22nd St. and N. Country Club, much larger park with an outdoor performance center & stage, ramadas, playground equipment & stone turtles for children, a rose garden, dog run, a duck pond & gurgling streams, artistic sculptures, etc.

4. The Reid Park Zoo for the children and out of town guests: elephants, tigers, bears, (oh my!), even unusual anteaters and a capybara.

5. The Loft Theater, 3233 E. Speedway, independent and creative movie showings, plus a promised expansion and often freebies during special events

6. Casa Video, 2905 E. Speedway, terrific collection of recent and old DVDs and videos, plus free popcorn whenever you drop in (open daily 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.)

7. Yoshimatsu/Sushimatsu at 2660 N. Campbell – authentic Japanese food in two unique restaurants, plus a very cute gift shop of Japanese items, toys

8. Bookman’s on Grant (SE corner of Campbell): a used book store and much more – gift items, art paraphernalia, current magazines, musical instruments, electronic stuff, even jewelry. And a new Bookman’s is coming to E. Speedway near Camino Miramonte.

9. The University of AZ, between Speedway & E. 6th Street, between Euclid Ave. and Campbell, not only an undergraduate & graduate university, but a resource for the community with art displays, outdoor sculptures, lectures, musical & dance performances, festivals & workshops, intellectual stimulation for all ages. Starting tomorrow an 8-day Chinese Culture Festival, event schedule at www.confucius.arizona.edu.

10. Bicycle path on E. 3rd St. runs from Wilmot Road westward through midtown past lovely, small Miramonte Neighborhood Park (NW corner of Richey Blvd.), one block south of Himmel Park aforementioned (Treat Ave. and Tucson Blvd.), right through the University of Az (on University Blvd.) through to 4th Avenue and Stone Avenue, with several bicyle-friendly “hawk” crossings to help bicyclists cross the major intersections. For more info on bicycling and bike maps in Tucson, go to Tucson Pima County Bicycle Advisory Committee website (click here).

These are the 10 things that make my life more enjoyable and fun in midtown Tucson. What are yours?

Just discovered another new midtown restaurant, Hibachi Super Buffet, which opened last month and serves Chinese, Japanese & Korean food. Stay tuned for my review. It’s at 4629 E. Speedway, NW corner of Speedway/Swan.

Molina’s Midway Mexican food, N. Belvedere north of Speedway
Lerua’s Mexican food, E. Broadway, east of Campbell
Blue Willow, North Campbell , north of Grant

    all local restaurants

Thanks Carol for your recommendations. We’ve been to Lerua’s and to Blue Willow, but never to Molina’s, so that’s on the list for the future.

Carolyn, great article as always but dont sell the east side/northeast side short too early.
I also have Bookmans and Casa Molino, And I have Udall Park with that rec center and the Wilmot and Bear Canyon Library with two Dairy Queens too. I also have an Ace Hardware close and the “Supersized Ace ” at 22nd and Kolb. My Walgreens (who doesnt) is close as well as Lowe’s! Lots of grocery stores.
I do miss Casa Video when I lived in Barrio Volvo. (Sam Hughes Neighborhood) But my daughter picks up Red Box for us at a buck. And the movie theater at Kolb and Broadway is 3 dollars and on Tuesdays its a $1.25.
Just thought you would like to hear from and eastsider, now I feel sorry for the folks who live in Vail or way out Northwest!

    • Carolyn_Classen

Yes, Tiffany Kjos of the Star mentioned some of those places in her Eastside article (see link above). Thanks for the suggestions as always Fraser007.

What I like best about Reid Park is the walking path. My favorite Midtown dog groomer is Pet Designs. My favorite Midtown restaurants are Zivaz (walking distance for me), Tucson Tamale Company, Kazuko Sushi, Zayna’s Mediterranean. If I have company and the weather is cool, I like to walk to Lodge on the Desert for breakfast or happy hour. And then there’s Nadine’s Bakery for fresh rye bread. Oh, my. I’m also a Loft Member for the close proximity. I like Choate’s post office and the UPS store on Broadway/Alvernon. Those folks have been so helpful to me thru the years.

Kazuko Sushi on Speedway is where you & I had lunch once, but I haven’t been back…thanks for the tips about the other midtown places, esp. Zivaz. Glad you’re a Loft Theatre member as well.

At the Chinese Culture Festival I watched the Chinese lion dance, tai chi, sword demonstrations, then got a free ticket to the Reid Park Zoo by visiting 3 booths (calligraphy, martial arts, & nutrition). Checked out the cute baby zebra, the new elephant Tanzania exhibit (wow, lots of space), and of course the swimming capybara. Baby anteater was probably being protected by its mother/father, so didn’t get a view.

And don’t forget the Mini Time Machine, Dah Rock Shop, Ted’s Country Store, Aqua Vita and many more excellent places to go eat or otherwise experience. Midtown is great for those who know its charms.

    • Carolyn_Classen

Yes, as I wrote this article I wondered where to draw the line when midtown ends and east side begins. I think it used to be Wilmot Road, but all that you list are west of there. Thanks for your suggestions, as I wrote about the Mini Time Machine Museum as well recently.

What these comments prove is that we live in a really great town! Oh I know we have lots pf potholes and high crime and a City Council that is inept. But there are lots of great places to eat and go to and to shop.
I have wondered what the defination of the mid-town is vs. east side. The east side of Tucson when I got here in 1966 seems to be a mid-town experience now!! lol
I still feel sorry for the extreme s.e side and the extreme n.w. side. So many miles to drive for such blandness.LOL
