In what many regard as Brecht’s masterpiece, Mother Courage profiteers from a constant state of war, as she loses her children to it one by one. Her cynical manipulation of the miseries of others robs her of her title, and at the play’s end she is mother to no one. Written in a burst of energy after the invasion of Poland, it is one of our principal ruminations on the nature of war

I’ve seen a production of this play elsewhere, and it’s very dark but powerful. Since we are still in a war in Afghanistan, it is very timely about the ravages of war.

The Rogue Theater just won a 2012 National Theater Company Award (only 10 in the country). Click here for the AZPM Channel 6 TV show about this award presented by the American Theater Wing.

UA Professor Albrecht Classen’s comments on this play: “Gripping performance of Brecht’s probably most famous play, Mother Courage. The actors brought to life the most difficult issue in life, whether to secure one’s basic needs to live or whether to prioritize ethical, moral, and religious values. The troupe of actors amazingly reenacted Brecht’s play most impressively, representing very powerfully these human dilemmas, wonderfully accompanied by newly composed music. At the end the audience was deeply frustrated and excited at the same time, frustrated b/c Brecht’s message is so painfully clear, and excited b/c here we have a dramatic challenge to our own existence and our military-industrial complex. Anti-war message in its true nature. The Rogue Theatre deserves full recognition for this play.” My Native German husband and a colleague went to this play last night.
