Throw on your poncho and tighten your holsters for an all-day movie marathon celebrating one of the greatest trilogies in film history … Sergio Leone’s classic trio of Italian Spaghetti Westerns starring the one-and-only Clint Eastwood as the world’s toughest (and squintiest) anti-hero, The Man With No Name!

A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS
(Sergio Leone, 1964, Italy/Spain, 99 mins., Rated R) 35mm
Clint Eastwood can take a joke, but unfortunately his mule can’t, and mayhem ensues in the first of Leone’s “Man With No Name” series, with the non-eponymous hero hiring himself out to each of the trigger-happy factions battling in the same desolate, seemingly unpopulated desert town. This is where it all began … the iconic kick-off for the wildly-popular ‘60s Spaghetti Western cycle, and the star-making role for erstwhile Rawhide actor Eastwood. Borrowing more than a bit from Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, Leone’s violent thriller forever changed the way we thought about westerns, and in the process gave “spaghetti” a whole new meaning!

FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE
(Sergio Leone, 1965, Italy/Spain, 132 mins., Rated R) 35mm
An atypically weak moment for Eastwood’s Man With No Name, as Lee Van Cleef’s steely, black-clad ex- Rebel officer proves range can beat speed in a gunfight — but then they team up to hunt ruthless killer Gian Maria Volonté and all that bounty money. The most openly parodic of the entire trilogy, Leone pokes bloody fun at Western conventions and ratchets up the stylization to something approaching grandeur. Highlights include Volonté’s electrifying prison breakout; Eastwood keeping score — by bounty money tallies — of the body count; and Van Cleef striking a match off the hunched back of … Klaus Kinski!

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY / Brand-New Digital Restoration!
(Sergio Leone, 1966, Italy/Spain, 161 mins., Rated R) Digital
“If you’re gonna shoot, shoot! Don’t talk.” Lee Van Cleef’s icy bounty hunter (“The Bad”), Eli Wallach’s Mexican bandito (“The Ugly”) and Clint Eastwood’s con man (“The Good”) contend with each other and with battling Civil War armies in their relentless search for buried gold.
Leone’s epic, trilogy-capping Western (accompanied by — Hwah, WAH, Wah — perhaps Ennio Morricone’s greatest score) conjures up operatic excess, existential cowboy crisis and the blackest of black humor. Who can forget the climatic stare down showdown, Wallach’s endearing (and frequent) use of the term “Blondie,” and that kick-in-the-head closing shot?

Wow, all 3 of these movies at one sitting/screening. I enjoyed all three when I first saw them especially with the young, masculine Clint Eastwood, not knowing they were filmed in Italy and Spain. Like most viewers, I thought the scenes were from the Southwest or Mexico.

Councilman Kozachik announces re-election campaign for Ward 6

Councilman Steve Kozachik Announces His Re-election Campaign

Councilman Steve Kozachik

VoteKoz2013 Campaign Honorary Co-Chairs
Robert Walkup – Former Mayor (R)
Dr. Richard Carmona – Former U.S. Surgeon General (D)
Ms. Carol West – Former Tucson City Council Member (I)

Last week I formally filed papers for re-election to the Tucson City Council, Ward 6 seat. It has been my honor to serve the constituents of this Ward, and of the broader City. I look forward to continuing working on behalf of all residents of the community in the years to come. We’re just putting together the current campaign. You will be hearing more on how it will roll out in the days to come.

Over the course of the past three years I have demonstrated my willingness to study issues individually, and to advocate for policy based on the specific set of facts related to each of them, not being bound by preconceived notions or rigid ideology. The public policy issues we face are too complex to approach the task of governance in any other manner.

Through that process, I have worked with constituents who reflect all political parties. Whether the issues involve business interests, the rights of private property owners, protecting the taxpayers money, labor, or management, my approach has consistently been to listen to the multiple voices as they weigh in on a given issue and work to find the common ground that represents sound public policy.

That approach to governance has resulted in my being in a position to announce today that three highly respected members of our community, each reflecting a different place on the political spectrum have agreed to serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for my campaign. I believe their willingness to attach their names and reputations to my campaign validates the approach that I have taken to create informed and transparent public policy since 2009. I am extremely thankful to Bob Walkup, Dr. Richard Carmona, and Carol West for this showing of support. I am committed to continuing to work in a way that earns their trust, as well as that of the electorate in this community.

Also up for re-election this year is 2 term Ward 3 Councilmember Karin Uhlich, who announced her candidacy at Democrats of Greater Tucson (DGT) on Monday, and 1 term Ward 5 Councilmember Richard Fimbres, who is seeking re-election. He is listed as a future speaker at DGT, www.tucsondemocrats.org.

Councilman Kozachik, formerly a Republican and political newcomer, defeated incumbent Democrat Nina Trasoff for the Ward 6 seat in 2009.

All three Councilmembers seeking re-election in 2013 are Democrats.

The festival runs from Feb. 1 to 15, daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for you to view the large selection of sculptures.

I dropped by the opening last year at the Sculpture Resource Center, and was amazed at the variety and beauty of the sculptures.

My husband and I just attended the Full Moon reception on Saturday at Metal Arts Village (3230 N. Dodge Blvd). and especially enjoyed the sculptures of Jerry Harris aka “The Village Blacksmith” who has four sculptures there, including an imaginative deer bench. He’s a forged steel & bronze sculptor at 2967 N. Alvernon Way, and his blacksmith shop is definitely worth a visit.

Next Full Moon reception at Metal Arts Village is on Monday February 25, 5 to 8 p.m. Just watch for the Full Moon and visit that collective of metal artists, a cute coffee shop (The Coffee Loft), and also a bead store. Website: http://www.metalartsvillage.com/

Check out these fantastic sculptures at this festival and later at their studios.
