Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, Wonder Women! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation.

This is a movie part of Community Cinema, which is “a national civic engagement initiative featuring free monthly screenings of films from the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens. Every month in 100+ cities, community members come together to learn, discuss, and get involved in key social issues of our time”.

Being as March is Women’s “Herstory” Month, this is a timely film by Kristy Guevara- Flanagan. I grew up like most American girls worshiping the strength of Wonder Woman, as well as Super Girl.

If you miss this Himmel Library showing, here’s the schedule for other libraries in March:

Friday March 15, 2 to 4 p.m., Oro Valley branch library, 1305 W. Naranja Dr., Oro Valley

Monday, March 25, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Mission branch library, 3770 S. Mission Road, Tucson

Wednesday, March 27, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Valencia branch library, 202 W. Valencia Rd., Tucson

And the UA Women’s Resource Center is also showing this film (free as well) on Wednesday April 17, 6:30 p.m. They are located on the 4th level of the Student Union Memorial Center, 1303 E. University Blvd., west side of the building.

Fascinating history of the Wonder Woman comic series, the TV show (starring Lynda Carter), and about how women have been depicted in movies & on TV, since Dec. 1941 when the Wonder Woman comic emerged. The film analyzed strong women characters over the years including Thelma & Louise, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xena. Good inspiring film for daughters and young women to view.
