Tucson Modernism Week Oct. 4 – 6by Carolyn Classen on Oct. 01, 2013, under Arts, Life
The Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation is proud to present Tucson Modernism Week 2013: October 4, 5 & 6. The three day extravaganza is a series of programs, film, lectures and events highlighting and celebrating Tucson’s Mid-century Modern design and architecture. The programming emphasizes the Modernist Buildings of Broadway Boulevard between Country Club and Campbell Avenue.
Tucson’s modernism captured the exuberance of the post WWII era, and is defined by clean, simple lines and a casual informality. In the southern Arizona desert the movement has come to be defined as Sonoran Modern with the use of regional materials, adaptation to the desert climate and an emphasis on indoor/outdoor living.
The entire schedule is online (click here) for the many activities planned, including lectures, furniture exhibits, films at the Loft, art receptions, etc. Some events require tickets so book ahead.
The weekend’s Modernism events culminate with a home tour on Sunday Oct. 6, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with ticket price at $35.00. Starting Point: Murphey Building, 1961 (Juan Woner y Bas Architect), 2959 East Broadway, Tucson, Arizona. Purchase your tickets online here.
