Someone recently reminded me that today is Friday the 13th of December. Then I started wondering why is it considered an unlucky day?
Here’s what wikipedia has to say throughout history:
I guess it’s unlucky to die on Friday the 13th. Granted, lots of people dislike the number 13, and lots of city skyscrapers have no 13th floor. The woman aforementioned (as the “someone”) said she thought it all began recently with that teen slasher movie filmed in 1980, “Friday the 13th” starring Kevin Bacon:
I confess I haven’t seen it.
Another online website, About.com has this to say under Urban Legends:
LEGEND HAS IT: If 13 people sit down to dinner together, one will die within the year. The Turks so disliked the number 13 that it was practically expunged from their vocabulary (Brewer, 1894). Many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue. Many buildings don’t have a 13th floor. If you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devil’s luck (Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, Theodore Bundy and Albert De Salvo all have 13 letters in their names). There are 13 witches in a coven
Thankfully my full name has 14 letters. And we only had 10 at our Thanksgiving dinner.
So tell me readers what has your spooky or unlucky experience been on Friday the 13th of any month?
I saw a black cat cross my path the other day and I felt scared. That’s silly isn’t it? Or is it?
Otherwise, be aware of/beware? Friday the 13th. And good luck today.
