A Stanley Kubrick Odyssey at the Loft in May

A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
In conjunction with our May 3rd opening of the new documentary Room 237, The Loft is thrilled to present A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick, a month-long retrospective of nine classic feature films from the innovative, influential and always controversial filmmaker. One of cinema’s undisputed masters, Stanley Kubrick changed the way we thought about film, unleashing his trademark stylistic rigor, technical innovation and devilish wit on nearly every genre imaginable: war films (Full Metal Jacket), historical epics (Barry Lyndon), black comedies (Dr. Strangelove), science fiction (2001: A Space Odyssey), film noirs (The Killing), marital dramas (Eyes Wide Shut), horror thrillers (The Shining) and more. All throughout the month of May, you can experience these timeless classics by this visionary filmmaker the way they were meant to be seen – with an audience and on the big screen!

The Killing / A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
One showing only! Thursday, May 2nd 2013

The Killing, propelled by a tricky fragmented time structure later used in such neo-noirs as Reservoir Dogs, follows the assorted crooks and lowlifes involved in a complicated racetrack robbery, and stars a steely Sterling Hayden at his coldhearted best.

The Shining / A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
Starts on Saturday, May 4th 2013

Jack Nicholson suffers from one helluva case of writer’s block in Stanley Kubrick’s eccentric adaption of Stephen King’s metaphysical horror novel, The Shining.

Lolita / A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
One showing only! Thursday, May 9th 2013

Kubrick’s distinct take on Nabakov’s highly unusual tale of a doomed romance between a middle-aged intellectual and a 12-year-old nymphet included an Oscar-nominated screenplay by the novelist himself, and (in an effort to circumvent the censors) the tweaking of Lolita’s age from 12 to 14.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb / A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
One showing only! Saturday, May 11th 2013

One of the greatest black comedies ever made, Stanley Kubrick’s outrageous swipe at political and military insanity is the ultimate doomsday satire of the nuclear age.

Barry Lyndon / A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
One showing only! Thursday, May 16th 2013

A visually ravishing drama, filled to bursting with ornate imagery reminiscent of paintings from the story’s 18th century period, Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel depicts the rise and fall of a sensitive rogue in the British aristocracy.

A Clockwork Orange / A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
One showing only! Saturday, May 18th 2013

Fitting for a film that is ultimately about free will and individuality, A Clockwork Orange, based on the novel by Anthony Burgess, may be Stanley Kubrick’s most idiosyncratic work – an exceedingly artful, yet savagely pessimistic, evocation of a dystopian future and a hugely influential cult classic that remains challenging, right-of-passage viewing for adventurous film lovers.

Full Metal Jacket / A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
One showing only! Thursday, May 23rd 2013

“What is your major malfunction, numbnuts?” is one of the more printable epithets hurled by Marine sergeant R. Lee Ermey at new recruits (ie, “maggots”) Matthew Modine, Arliss Howard and primary whipping boy Vincent D’Onofrio in Stanley Kubrick’s terrifically intense exploration of the nightmarish realities and psychological toll of modern warfare.

2001: A Space Odyssey / A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
One showing only! Saturday, May 25th 2013

Based on Arthur C. Clark’s story “The Sentinel,” this mind-blowing meditation on technology and humanity thrillingly hypothesizes mankind’s evolution from ape to astronaut to celestial being, while scientists Dave Bowman and Frank Poole do battle with a snarky artificial intelligence unit named HAL and eventually try to crack the mystery of those baffling black monoliths.

Eyes Wide Shut / A Kubrick Odyssey: The Films of Stanley Kubrick
One showing only! Thursday, May 30th 2013

Stanley Kubrick took on the erotic thriller genre and polarized audiences one last time in this chilly and perverse meditation on a couple in psychosexual crisis. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s real-life status as a married couple (at the time) gives a unique frisson to what turned out to be Kubrick’s final film, completed just a week prior to his passing.

Amazingly enough, I’ve seen most of these films with the exception of “Lolita”, but I’ve read that book. Catch up on any you may have missed over the years. But I warn you, The Shining is so scary that I couldn’t sleep the night that I saw it (note photo of Jack Nicholson above if you have any doubts about the horror of that film). Be scared — starting May 4th for The Shining. Note that the other films are for one night only.
