The counting apparently took so long because many voters who received early ballots only turned them in on General Election Day, which slowed up the tallying process.

Rebecca White Berch, Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, last week presented the Chief Justice’s Distinguished Service Award to Mike Hellon for “Outstanding Contributions to the Arizona Judiciary.”

The top award presented annually by the Chief Justice, is given to an individual who has made an “Outstanding Contribution to the Arizona Courts.” Hellon’s award cited his service in “preserving the dignity of the judiciary and for your many years of dedicated service in improving the legal profession.” Hellon is not a lawyer.

In her remarks to the Judicial Conference, Chief Justice Berch cited Hellon’s service of twenty-two years as a small claims hearing officer for the Pima County Justice Court; his service on the Judicial Performance Review Commission, where is the current Chairman; his membership on the Arizona Judicial Council, which is the “board of directors of the court system;” and his service as the only non-lawyer on the faculty of the Judicial College of Arizona.

Hellon is running for District 1 Pima County Board of Supervisors in the upcoming August 28 Primary against three other Republicans including LD 26 Rep. Vic Williams and two newcomers to politics, Ally Miller and Stuart McDaniel. Mike is also divorced from former LD 26 State Senator Toni Hellon.

Here is my previous article about Mike’s candidacy (click here).

I personally know Mike having served over 7 years — also as a part-time Hearing Officer in the Small Claims Division of the Pima County Consolidated Justice Courts, where Mike is one of our trainers. And Mike as a non-lawyer does seem to know more about the law than I do, despite my law degree and several years of practicing.

Congratulations Mike for this award!

Monday June 25, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Kirk-Bear Canyon library, 8959 E. Tanque Verde Rd. (NE corner of Bear Canyon Rd. and Tanque Verde Rd.)

We invite you to take this opportunity to meet and converse with Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll. Supervisor Carroll has represented District 4 on the Pima County Board of Supervisors since February 1997.

Mr. Carroll was born in Chicago, Illinois and attended Catholic and public schools in that city. In 1980, he became a Westerner when he moved to Denver, Colorado and entered Regis University. He was graduated with honors in 1984, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy. He then moved to Tucson. Prior to his service on the Board of Supervisors, Mr. Carroll was Foundation Manager for Casa de los Niños. He also served as Chairman on the City of Tucson’s Housing Board.

From Supervisor Carroll’s website:

Now in his 15th year on the county legislative body, he has established a firm reputation among his constituents for advocating open, transparent county decision-making based upon the very lowest taxes consistent with responsible government.

Mr. Carroll has been the recipient of many prestigious awards over the years. Some of the more recent accolades include: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Outstanding Achievement Award for Public Service, presented in 2007 at a ceremony in San Francisco; the Hero of the Taxpayer Award, presented in 2007 by the Arizona Federation of Taxpayers; the Sky Island Alliance Award for Public Service, presented in 2008 for his leadership in opposing the proposed Rosemont Mine; and, the Governor Howard Pyle Award, presented in 2009 in Phoenix by the Republican Party of Arizona for his political leadership in southern Arizona.

Carroll was first appointed to his seat in May, 1997 and was elected to it in Nov. 1998. He has been unopposed since then in the primary & general elections, except for this year when he faces a political newcomer, businessman Sean Collins in the Republican primary on August 28.

As for the other Supervisors, District 1 Supervisor Ann Day is retiring, and 4 Republicans (Mike Hellon, Ally Miller, Stuart McDaniel, and LD 26 House Rep. Vic Williams) will face off in the August primary, to challenge 1 Democrat (former LD 26 House Rep. Nancy Young Wright) for that seat.

In the other Supervisor races– Districts 2, 3 and 5–Republican political newcomers are also challenging each of the Democratic incumbents, all in the November 6 General Election:

District 2: James Kelley vs. Supervisor Ramon Valadez, current Chairman of the Board
District 3: Tanner Bell vs. Supervisor Sharon Bronson
District 5: Fernando Gonzales vs. Supervisor Richard Elias
He is a fifth-generation Tucsonan and an alumnus of Salpointe High School and the University of Arizona.

This forum will take place during the Garden District Neighborhood Association’s monthly meeting.

Democrat Richard is up for re-election this fall for another 4 year term in District 5. Republican Fernando Gonzales, a political newcomer, took out papers on May 4 to run against Richard in the November election. *

Meet Richard Elías

When: Tuesday, May 15, 6-8 pm
Where: Martha Cooper Branch Library, 1377 N. Catalina Avenue (north of Speedway, east of Columbus).

So here’s your chance to speak with Richard about Pima County issues.

As for the other 4 Supervisors up for re-election this year…

District 1 Republican Supervisor Ann Day is retiring and 4 Republicans (Mike Hellon, Ally Miller, Stuart McDaniel, LD 26 House Rep. Vic Williams) are facing off in their August 28 primary to face former LD 26 House Rep. Democrat Nancy Young Wright for that seat.

District 2 Democratic Supervisor Ramon Valadez is being challenged by Republican James Kelley, former blogger “The Cholla Jumps” here at Tucsoncitizen.com, a political newcomer.

District 3 Supervisor Democrat Sharon Bronson is facing a Republican opponent Tanner Bell (political newcomer), and District 4 Supervisor Republican Ray Carroll is also facing a political newcomer Sean Collins, but in the Republican primary.

*5/15/12 Update: Fernando Gonzales announced his candidacy for this District 5 seat today:

The Sun City Vistoso Republican Club is sponsoring an “Important Debate” Featuring Republican Candidates for Pima County Board of Supervisors, District 1 Supervisor

Tuesday April 17, 2012, 3:00 p.m. at the Social Hall Auditorium

Press release from Sun City Vistoso Republican Club:

Why is this Important? Here are some reasons:

Spending is out of Control in Pima County. Pima County has about $1.5 billion in Debt. This is about 3 times that of all the other counties in the State of Arizona COMBINED.
Property taxes continue rising while home values have dropped.

Pima County has excessive regulation and an unfriendly climate for businesses resulting in a loss of jobs for our residents.

Pima County has a $1.3 billion dollar operating budget yet roads are not maintained and have now become a public safety hazard.

It is vitally important that we elect the very best candidate for this office; someone who is up on the issues and dedicated to exposing the problems and doing everything that can be done to correct them.

Our upcoming District 1 debate forum will allow you and other residents to decide who that candidate should be and subsequently who to vote for. These issues affect all of us. All Sun City Vistoso residents are invited regardless of political affiliation.

Please arrive by 2:45 p.m. as seating is limited and the debate will start
promptly at 3:00 p.m. April 17 is the Special Election Day. No visible campaign material may be worn in the Social Hall.

Republican District 1 Supervisor Ann Day is retiring, and all four Republican candidates seeking her position were invited to this debate. Candidates Mike Hellon, Stuart McDaniel, Ally Miller have committed to attend, but LD 26 House Rep. Vic Williams may be unable to attend if the Arizona Legislature is still in session. Mike Hellon ran unsuccessfully for CD 8 House in 2006, and Miller and McDaniel are political newcomers.

April 17 is also the day for the special CD 8 House primary (seat vacated by injured Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords), so it will be a busy day. Four Republicans are running in their primary (LD 30 State Senator Frank Antenori, Jesse Kelly, Martha McSally, & Dave Sitton). Democrat Ron Barber is running unopposed, and Green Party candidate Charles Manolakis of Tucson is facing a write-in challenge from Richard Grayson of Apache Junction. Vote wisely.
