KUAT Channel 6 interview of Republican Mayoral write-in candidate

Friday, August 19th, 2011

KUAT channel 6 reporters Christopher Conover and Andrea Kelly interviewed one write-in Republican who is vying in their primary on August 30 to be their party’s choice for Mayor of Tucson. Click here for the interview on August 19 of carpenter/construction worker Daryl Peterson. Lobbyist Rick Grinnell (the other write-in running for Mayor) was unable to attend the taping. Either needs 1060 write-in votes to qualify for the November general election ballot. Neither has run for Mayor before, but Grinnell has unsuccessfully run twice in the past for the Ward 2 Council seat.

Neither former Mayoral Republican candidates Ron Asta nor Shaun McClusky submitted enough valid signatures to qualify to be on the primary ballot, which is why there will be no Republican name printed on these ballots.

The two Democratic write-in candidates for Mayor, political newcomers David Karr and Joseph Maher Jr. were interviewed on KUAT two weeks before on August 5 (click here). They are facing Democratic candidate Jonathan Rothschild, who submitted 3283 signatures to qualify to have his name on the Democratic primary ballot. Rothschild is also a political newcomer and was interviewed on KUAT back in January (click here).

Also running for Mayor are two Green candidates Dave Croteau and Mary DeCamp who will face off in the Green Party primary on August 30. Croteau ran for Mayor before in 1999 (write-in) and 2007, and DeCamp ran for the Ward 3 Council seat two years ago. Their KUAT interview can be viewed here.

Ballots for the primary on August 30 were mailed out last week starting August 10. Absolute deadline for these ballots to be submitted to be counted is 7 p.m. on August 30.

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

This has been a busy political week for “Carolyn’s Community” following the Mayor & Tucson City Council campaigns. Just a brief recap for those of you who may not be following these races as closely as the rest of us:

–”Mike Jenkins withdraws from Ward 4 Council race” (Feb. 20, 2011), click here. 4 term Democratic Councilmember Shirley Scott is now running unopposed.

–”Mayor Walkup to announce he will not run for re-election in his State of the City Address today” (Feb. 22, 2011), click here. Republican realtor Shaun McClusky (who lost to Ward 5 Councilmember Richard Fimbres in Nov. 2009) announced his bid for Mayor in January, as did Democrat attorney Jonathan Rothschild.

—”Marcia Ortega withdraws from Ward 1 Council race” (February 22, 2011), click here. That leaves one term Councilmember Regina Romero facing off with fellow Democrat businessman Joe Flores in the August 30 primary.

–And finally, “Ron Asta announces bid for Mayor of Tucson” (February 23, 2011), click here. Land planner/former Pima County Supervisor Asta faces McClusky in the Republican primary on August 30, then the winner will challenge Rothschild in the General election on November 8, 2011.

Councilmember Paul Cunningham in Ward 2 is running unopposed at this point. He was appointed to that position in May, 2010.

Let the races begin.
