Back in March, during Women’s “Herstory” month, I blogged about the rise of women politicians in Arizona (click here). Coming up is Women’s Equality Day on August 26, celebrating the suffrage movement allowing women the right to vote.

So now as we head into the Arizona primary on Tuesday August 24, here’s a list of the women candidates and politicians up for re-election in Arizona (and mostly Southern Arizona). D stands for Democratic Party, G for Green Party, R for Republican Party.

Seems like there’s now a woman candidate for almost every elected office in Arizona (except State Mine Inspector, which doesn’t quite seem like a woman’s job). But I could be wrong on that one. We have come a long way.

Vote wisely on or before August 24.

Republican Treasurer Dean Martin did not run for re-election and recently withdrew from his bid for Arizona Governor. Four Republicans are running in the August Primary for State Treasurer. So who are these candidates?

–Ted Carpenter, retired firefighter, served eight years in Arizona House and as Maricopa County Deputy Superintendent of Schools, no website available

– Doug Ducey, former CEO & Chair of Cold Stone Creamery, endorsed by current Treasurer Dean Martin, www.votedougducey.com

– Barbara Leff, 14 years in Arizona state legislature (4 terms in State House, in 3rd term in the State Senate as President Pro Tem), www.barbaraleff.com

– Thayer Verschoor, 8 years as State Senator, Chair of the “Ax the Tax” campaign against Proposition 100, www.theaztreasurer.com

So these are 3 candidates who have experience in the Arizona legislature, and one businessman/political newcomer.

The Republican winner for Arizona Treasurer will face off with Democratic challenger Andrei Cherny, a former Assistant Attorney General and economic policy expert, www.andreiforarizona.com. There are also 2 write in candidates Thomas Meadows (Green Party) and Thane Eichenauer (Libertarian Party).
