Celebrate 4th of July, Chinese style

Membership has its benefits and this celebration at the lovely Tucson Chinese Cultural Center is free for people like me who are members, otherwise it’s $5. Sponsored by the Tucson Chinese Association, this 4th of July party is a fun way to celebrate America’s 236th birthday. For more information, call 520-292-6900, at 1288 W. River Rd. The public is invited to this event, and you don’t have to be Chinese to become a member of the center.
(By the way, growing up in Hawaii I experienced Chinese fireworks celebrations twice a year — New Year’s Eve on December 31st and on the 4th of July. They were ubiquitous and highly popular on every populated Hawaiian island: most everyone exploded firecrackers and played with sparklers, or shot up Roman candles (fountains) into the night air. The variety of fireworks has increased over the years back home, but now there are more regulations on usage -only during certain hours, with fees for permits to explode firecrackers.)
