Saturday, April 27 at 10:00am

Free Admission

The Fund for Civility, Respect and Understanding presents the second-annual PSA showcase to end bullying!

Join students, parents, teachers and community members for a showcase and awards ceremony for student produced 30 second public service announcements themed “BYSTANDER EMPOWERMENT!” The End of Bullying Task Force of the Fund for Civility, Respect and Understanding along with the Pima County Attorney’s Office and Cox Communications invite the community to attend this powerful event as we watch solutions to bullying through students video art.

Admission is free for all and we will have free popcorn, water and T-shirts for the first 300 youth. Lastly, thanks to Cox Communications, we will have a raffle for an iPad for one lucky audience member (you must be present to win.)

Present will be 12 year old Levi Fallavollita, local author of “The Good, the Bad and the Bullies” published in 2012. I just heard Levi and his mother Chantel (who was bullied as a child for a physical disability) speak at 2nd Annual Youth & Peace conference at Doolen Middle School on March 16. Levi is on a mission to do what he can to stop bullies, as he was a victim in elementary school.

Our community needs to have a zero tolerance attitude to bullying of children and each other.

Monday, January 21st at 8:00 a.m.

Free Admission!

TV on the big screen is made possible by Cox Communications.

Tasty and refreshing “Obama-mosas” will be available for sale at the snack bar! Raise a glass as President Obama officially takes office!

This year, celebrate MLK Day by joining together with others in the Tucson community to watch the live simulcast of President Barack Obama’s inauguration, projected on The Loft’s big screen! The official theme for the 2013 inauguration is “Faith in America’s Future,” commemorating the United States’ perseverance and unity, marking the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation! What could be a better reason to get up this early in the morning?

Commemorate this momentous moment AND celebrate the lasting legacy of the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with your fellow Tucsonans as we gather together to usher in the beginning of a new chapter in American history!

January 21, 2013 also happens to be the Martin Luther King Day holiday, so a celebration will be happening over at Old Main on the UA Mall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. This is a fitting coincidence of America’s first Half African American President’s 2nd inauguration on Martin Luther King Day. From Blog for AZ calendar:

March and Festival, University of Arizona Mall. March will begin at 9:00 a.m. in front of the MLK Center on the corner of 2nd Street and Mountain Avenue. The March will end in front of Old Main (East side). Speeches and entertainment begin at 10:00 a.m. For more information please contact Donna Liggins at (520) 237-7806 or Diedra Jones at (520) 370-6528.

Also at the Loft, a free movie “La Source” at 5 p.m. for MLK Day:

Narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda), the new documentary La Source tells the uplifting story of Josue Lajuenesse, who grew up in the rural town of La Source, Haiti, where the residents live without plumbing or electricity and must embark on a treacherous hike up a mountain every day in order to obtain clean water. Now working as a janitor at Princeton University by day and a cab driver by night, Lajeunesse is convinced that there must be a better way for his hometown friends and family to live. Together with his carpenter brother Chrismedonne, who still lives in Haiti, Lajeunesse decides to return to his country after the devastating 2010 earthquake and organize an effort to finally bring what is most fundamental to his village’s survival; clean water. This award-winning documentary from director Patrick Shen (Flight from Death: The Quest for Immortality, The Philosopher Kings) is not just a movie about clean water and community transformation; it is a story of one unlikely hero, empowered by a vision, who did whatever it took to ignite the passion of people thousands of miles away to change the lives of those in La Source forever.
In 2011, Josue Lajuenesse was awarded Princeton University’s MLK Day Journey Award, which recognizes efforts to continue the journey to achieve Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of social change. (Dir. by Patrick Shen, 2012, 71 mins., Transcendental Media) Digital

Good luck Mr. President for another 4 years.

Come join us as we watch the Wildcats take on the Wolf Pack in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl!

Arizona, the first Pac-12 team to play in the Albuquerque-based bowl game, is 7-5 overall and have been ranked among the nation’s best all season, cracking the top 25 or receiving votes in every poll since Week 2. They upset two ranked teams, beating 18th-ranked Oregon State (59-38) and 10th-ranked USC (39-36). Arizona also boasts the nation’s leading rusher, Ka’Deem Carey, who has tallied 1,757 yards.

It is an interesting match-up with Nevada, which has the nation’s second leading rusher in Stefphon Jefferson. Arizona is seventh in the country in total offense while Nevada is 11th. The two programs have met before, but not since 1941. To date, the all-time series is 1-1-1.

“What a great matchup to kickoff college football’s post season,” Jeff Siembieda, Gildan New Mexico Bowl Executive Director said. “Two of the top offenses in America, the top two running backs in the country, two of college football’s top quarterbacks and playmakers all over the field. I think we’ve got the potential for a great, exciting football game.”

I attended the UA vs. ASU game (telecast via ESPN) on the Big Screen at the Loft Cinema, with some friends. It was amazing to watch such an exciting sports broadcast on a super-sized screen, with other enthusiastic loyal fans. Too bad we lost that game, but Go Cats on 12/15/12 in this bowl game.

Why stay home and watch your favorite TV shows or that big game alone? Join your friends at The Loft to experience it in HD!

Whether it’s Don Draper dropping by for a martini with Mad Men or Mrs. Patmore and Carson running upstairs and down at Downton Abbey, The Loft is excited to be able to invite you to watch on our really big TV! You can expect The Loft’s signature drink specials and other extras that will make this a whole lot more fun than your couch at home!

The Loft will kick off its adventures in TV with The Duel in the Desert! The Wildcats vs. the Sun Devils will be shown 8:00pm on Friday, November 23.

It’s time to experience the new stadium seating big screen (# 3) at the Loft, with the big post-Thanksgiving game against the ASU Sun Devils. My husband and I attended the recent ribbon cutting of this new screen and it is fantastic (not that I don’t like their huge screen # 1 or the intimate upstairs screen #2).

So if you don’t have tickets and want to see this exciting game with friends, check it out at the Loft. Go Cats!

11/23/12 Update: according to Loft website, this screening has been moved to their ultra-large theater #1 (probably due to popular demand from Cats’ fans).

Free Movie in the Park and Science & Technology Festival for Kids and
Families

Science is the theme of the 2nd Annual Movie in the Park with Cox
Communications. Co-sponsors include Arizona Technology Council, City
Councilor Regina Romero and City Council Member Richard Fimbres. To help
educate our youngest workforce about the benefits of science and
technology, the event features a festival with science-based fun
attractions for young people.

What: Free Family Fun Movie and Festival in the Park – Kennedy Park
Fiesta Area
Where: 3700 S. La Cholla Blvd – Take I-19 to Ajo, head west
to La Cholla, north on La Cholla and take first left into the Fiesta
Area, which is on the left
When: Saturday, October 1, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Movie starts at 7 p.m.
Festival 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Cox will be showing “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” where a
young girl learns the importance of science and making a difference in
our world. In the animated film, young people investigate how weather
can affect people, plants, and animals.

Volunteers with the non-profit International Council on Systems
Engineering (INCOSE), Raytheon, U of A and The Physics Factory are among
the groups providing a variety of science experiments. Experiments
include making a ping pong ball float. Can you control a ping pong ball
as it floats above a hair dryer? Put your hand-eye coordination skills
to the test while learning about gravity and air pressure. Kids can also
have fun making a dry ice bubble that will grow and grow as it fills
with fog. How big will it get before it bursts? Give it a try and find
out! Non-profit organizations El Rio Health Center Foundation and
Chicanos Por La Causa will be tabling at the event as well as the
Mission Library and others.

The event is free and open to the public. Food will be available for
purchase at the event. You may want to bring a blanket or lawn chair for
the grassy area to watch the film on the big screen under the stars. You
can also bring an ice chest with food and drinks but no alcohol is
allowed. Please call Regina Romero’s Ward 1 City Council office at
(520) 791-4040 for more information and speak with Diana Rhodes, Council Aide.

The next Movie in the Park with Cox will be October 22 at 6 p.m. at Jacobs Park.

This is our second annual concert showcasing Tucson’s unique cultural diversity,” said organizer Richard Elias, Pima County Supervisor, District 5. “We hope this free event will attract families downtown to enjoy great music at the beautiful Fox Tucson Theatre.” The performance is presented by Celebrate Tucson! In collaboration with Tucson Meet Yourself, Community Investment Corporation and 2nd Saturdays Downtown. Made possible by grants from the Pima County Board of Supervisors, The office of the Honorable Richard Elias, Service Employees International Union of Arizona (SEIU Arizona), Community Partnership of Southern Arizona (CPSA), The Pasqua Yaqui Nation, Cox Communications, Providence Service Corporation, the Honorable Regina Romero of the City of Tucson, La Frontera and the Fox Tucson Theatre.

The Gabriel Ayala Trio features Yaqui guitar master Gabriel Ayala, percussionist Greg Curtiss and bassist Gilbert Nagore. Based on a foundation of classical guitar compositions, the trio embraces the passion of Spanish flamenco with jazz improvisation and polyrhythmic world rhythms. Gabriel Ayala’s original repertoire is complemented by material from such diverse musicians as Chick Corea, Paco de Lucia, Vicente Amigo, Erik Satie, and The Eagles. Gabriel Ayala was recognized for musical achievement by former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and nominated by the Native American Music Awards for Best Independent Recording. He has performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. and at La Festival Internacional de la Guitarra Academica in Venezuela.

Rahe & illumiNation– Award-winning multilingual vocalist/composer/guitarist Rahe was raised in Spain, Japan and the United States. Her music can best be described as Acoustic World Pop, blending influences from Spain, Brazil, Africa, American Soul and Jazz. Her fresh, original sound includes Rahe on vocals and nylon string acoustic guitar, a saxophone quartet (alto, tenor and 2 baritones) and drums. In February she released her debut CD of all original multilingual material, Out of the Box, which reflects the diversity of her multicultural upbringing and passion for creating music that crosses boundaries, genres, and world cultures.

Reveille Men’s Chorus– Tucson’s internationally recognized men’s chorus is now in its 17th year of changing lives through music. What began in 1995 as a gay men’s community chorus with an array of singers has grown into a community institution of seasoned performers with an added public health focus on HIV/AIDS awareness, education and prevention. Under the leadership of artistic director, Shawn Cullen, Reveille continues to change lives through music via its community outreach, volunteer work and musical productions filled with humor and heart. Reveille Men’s Chorus is dedicated to musical excellence and performs worldwide to promote human rights, diversity and a world free of AIDS.

Suerte formed in 2009 to play old school Tejano music with a big band sound. This 10-piece orquesta features vocals with two trumpets, saxophone, piano, guitars, bass, percussion and drums. Tejano music originated in 19th century Texas when German, Czech and Polish immigrants introduced waltzes and polkas which blended with the corridas sung by Mexican musicians with guitars, flutes and drums. Suerte is comprised of veteran musicians who have played with groups in our city dating back to the 80′s and 90′s. Today, Tejano music incorporates elements of pop, rock and R&B as Suerte continues the evolution of this infectious border dance music.
