Please help with this fundraiser for homeless youth in Tucson. It’s tough enough being teenagers, with even tougher for those on the run or without stable homes. I’ve worked with teen runaways in the past, and many of them are running from domestic and sexual abuse.

Youth On Their Own supports the high school graduation and continued success of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs and guidance.

2 days — March 2 and 3 — of Active Adult Lifestyle activities — all at Tucson Convention Center, 10 to 4 p.m. daily. Note that parking costs $8/day at TCC, with free street parking on Saturday.

The Ages ’n Stages Active Adult Lifestyle Show is directed at the over-45 population of Pima County and will be “senior friendly” and intergenerational in nature.

You will discover new ways to enrich daily life; fun things to do and experience;
and new technologies available to change the way we live. There will be music,
events, live stage shows, and the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of activities.
It is a show about enjoying and getting the most out of life, and the many
options available to do just that.

Exhibitions will represent:
• the travel industry, parks and recreation
• leisure activities such as hiking, camping, fishing and biking
• new technologies for active families and adults
• artisans, fashion, restaurants and small businesses
• financial advisors, insurance companies and real estate advisors
• environmental organizations
• medical centers, health and wellness, health care providers and medical supply
• assisted living facilities and retirement centers

At Ages ’n Stages you will be able to explore easily the options available in our
community including exercise; hobbies; clubs; entertainment; art; performing
arts (dance, music, theater); cultural opportunities; fraternal and religious
organizations; community and educational organizations; and new ways to
gain more personal meaning from your life.

Note that Dr. Richard Carmona is the keynote speaker at UMC’s DuVal Auditorium at 1 p.m., with panel discussions later at Roy P. Drachman Hall, 1295 N. Martin Ave. Dr. Carmona was the 17th Surgeon General of the U.S. and is currently a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in AZ.

Response to Dr. Carmona’s address “A National Strategy for Health Care” will be done by Dr. J. Lyle Bootman, UA Dean of the College of Pharmacy.

Grinnell only entered the race in July of this year (click here for announcement blog), after the Pima County Republican Party failed to qualify a candidate from the petition nominations which had been due on June 1st. (Both potential Republican candidates Ron Asta and Shaun McClusky were disqualified in Superior court actions due to lack of the requisite # of valid signatures).

Grinnell attended Salpointe Catholic High School and has a degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. Since last year he has been a Board Member of the new Rio Nuevo Multi Purpose Facilities District. And reports are that his lobbying firm represents Augusta Resource Corporation, the Canadian firm that is proposing the controversial Rosemont Mine in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson.

Grinnell ran twice before for the Ward 2 Council seat in 1995 and 1999 and lost to Democratic Councilmember Janet Marcus and then Marcus’ aide Carol West (a Democrat who later became an Independent). Years ago he also served on the now-defunct Domestic Violence Commission (along with me and lots of other community members like Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall and Dr. Richard Carmona).

He faces Democrat Jonathan Rothschild and Green Mary DeCamp for the job of Mayor of Tucson, in the General Election on November 8, 2011.

Photos and bios of fallen officers (since 1878) will be displayed around the room, and on large screens with their “end of watch” date listed. 42 regional officers have fallen in the line of duty since then, but fortunately none in 2009. This is a very moving ceremony to give law enforcement officers, families of the fallen officers, and the public the “opportunity to remember and recognize the sacrifices made by these heroes.” The saddest moment of this ceremony is when “taps” is played.

One can only admire these law enforcement men/women who serve to protect our society, and have to give the ultimate sacrifice of their life in the line of duty. My uncle Harold Sugiyama back home in Hawaii was the Captain of his police department, but he lived to 90, unlike these fallen officers, many of whom died in their thirties.
