Wednesday, July 4th at 12:00 p.m. at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway
(Doors open 11:15 a.m.)
Admission: $6.00 general; $5.00 Loft members
Presented by Liberty Watch Radio and Inside Track

Join Tucson’s own Charles Heller of Liberty Watch Radio and Emil Franzi of Inside Track for a special Independence Day screening of the classic, Oscar-winning 1942 musical YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, starring the legendary JAMES CAGNEY!

PLUS: Belt it out at a patriotic “Star Spangled Banner” sing-a-long, and enjoy tasty $1.00 “Freedom Dogs,” juicy $2.00 “Uncle Sam-burgers” and cool drinks on the Loft patio before the movie!

“The Yankee Doodle Dandiest Entertainment of ‘em all!”

In 1942, celebrated Hollywood filmmaker Michael Curtiz (The Adventures of Robin Hood) offered up this lively, toe-tapping musical detailing the life of Broadway legend George M. Cohan, an instant classic that went on to win three Academy Awards, for Best Actor, Best Music Score and Best Sound. Filled with rip-roaring song, dance, pathos, pageantry, comedy, and, best of all, James Cagney at his Oscar-winning best, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY is a true gem from Hollywood’s Golden Age.

James Cagney, in a rare musical role, is a bundle of energy as the legendary, flag-waving song and dance man George M. Cohan (born on the Fourth of July, 1878!), from his humble vaudeville days with his family to widespread fame as the writer of “Over There,” “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and countless other memorable tunes. Great character actors like Rosemary DeCamp (The Life of Riley) and Walter Huston (Dodsworth) co-star in one of Hollywood’s splashiest and best-loved musicals – the perfect way to celebrate Independence Day AND put a little song in your heart.

Happy 4th of July everyone! Enjoy your day.

Admission: $25.00 all tickets
Tickets will also be sold at the door, beginning at 6pm.

Don’t miss a very special screening of a classic movie for a classic cause when Empire Ranch Foundation presents MONTE WALSH, the epic 1970 Western starring LEE MARVIN, JEANNE MOREAU and JACK PALANCE, and partially shot here in Southern Arizona! All proceeds from this screening will benefit the preservation of Empire Ranch, the local historic landmark used in the making of numerous classic Hollywood Westerns.

Featuring a post-film Q&A with PAM MARVIN (Lee Marvin’s widow), TODD ROBERTS (son of Monte Walsh producer Bobby Roberts), actor MITCH RYAN (Magnum Force, High Plains Drifter) who played Shorty Austin in the film, and actor BO HOPKINS (The Wild Bunch, Midnight Express) who played Jumpin’ Joe Joslin in the film.

“The performances are extraordinary. Marvin has seldom been better; he leaves in the toughness of his usual screen character, but he also reveals a lot of depth.” – Roger Ebert, THE CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

Oscar-winning Hollywood legend (and former Tucsonan) LEE MARVIN stars, along with a stellar cast including Jack Palance, Jeanne Moreau, Mitch Ryan and Bo Hopkins, in this gripping saga that covers the tumultuous final days of the Old West. Facing a changing landscape where barbed wire and railways are fast replacing the freedom of the open range, Monte Walsh (Marvin) and his fellow cowboys consider new work opportunities, toy with the idea of “settling down,” and draw their pistols for one last showdown. Widely considered to be one of the very best Westerns of the 1970s, MONTE WALSH features one of Lee Marvin’s greatest performances, as an aging cowboy looking for one last shot at relevance in a world that’s passing him by.

This special event is generously underwritten by THE GREEN VALLEY PECAN COMPANY:
http://www.greenvalleypecan.com/

VISIT THE EMPIRE RANCH FOUNDATION WEBSITE:
http://www.empireranchfoundation.org/

UPDATE: Lee Marvin’s widow Pam, Bo Hopkins, John White (stuntman), Professor Richard Shelton, Todd Roberts (son of producer Bobby), and Mark Hedley (producer of Westerns) were on the panel tonight, prior to the film showing. Pam said that the movie was of a “time long gone by, about the “demise of ranchers & cowboys”, that it was a “homage to cattle hands & the untamed West.” The others spoke of the movie’s filming at Old Tucson as well as the Reynolds Ranch nearby, about the late Lee Marvin (even driving his truck around Tucson hauling stuff in his neighborhood). Actor Hopkins said that Marvin was “great to work with”, that this film was his 3rd of 150 movies. Hedley was an extra in this film and remembered Lee Marvin as “gracious.” Q & A were questions about Western remakes, successors to great film stars, Marvin’s favorite restaurant in Tucson (Pam’s answer: Casa Adobes Drug Store for a good burger), importance of cowboy history, digital technology.

The film itself was well shot through Southern Arizona, had quite a few dramatic moments, as well as humor, with a bittersweet ending. It was mostly about the life & times of the cowboy out West, and decisions about the job or settling down with a family.

This movie showing was well attended and a successful benefit for the Empire Ranch Foundation. District 4 Supervisor Ray Carroll and “Inside Track” radio talk show host Emil Franzi (1030 AM KVOI) were in attendance.

–Dr. Mathew Jette: Ph.D. in political science from ASU, former Executive Speciality Rep. for Merck, Inc. in Phoenix and Tucson, www.govjette.com

–Dean Martin: Arizona State Treasurer elected in 2006, former LD 24 & LD 6 State Senator for 6 years, (no relation to the famous deceased actor with the same name), www.votedeanmartin.com

–Owen Buz Mills: Yavapai County entrepreneur & businessman (firearms and self-defense training facility), www.buz4gov.com

–John Munger, J.D.: Tucson attorney, former State Republican Party and Pima County Republican Party Chair, www.johnmunger.com

This forum will be moderated by radio host Jon Justice (“The Truth” 104.1FM), with panelists including District 4 Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll, Republican National Committeeman Bruce Ash, and radio personality Emil Franzi (“Inside Track”, KVOI 1030AM).

The two-hour event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Sabino High School, 5000 N. Bowes Road. Doors open at 6 p.m.

For more information contact Lori Oien at 749-3472, oienjmo@msn.com, or Parralee Schneider, 749-0312, pmstucson@aol.com. (Oien is an applicant for the vacant Ward 2 Council seat, and Schneider is a candidate for one of two LD 30 State House seats).

Come out to meet and greet these Republican candidates vying to unseat Governor Brewer in the August 24 primary. The winner will likely face Democrat Attorney General Terry Goddard, candidate for Governor. He unsuccessfully sought this position before in 1990 and 1994.
