Reminder: Town Hall/Roast tonight with Ward 6 Councilman Steve Kozachik (“Steve K”) and host David Fitzsimmons (“Fitz”), cartoonist of the AZ Daily Star, at the Loft, 7 p.m. From Steve K’s newsletter:

There has been an excellent response to the January 7th event – please continue to rsvp us @ 791.4601 or 795.0844. Also, if there are particular areas of interest you’d like to hear addressed (Federal, State, County, or local) send us an email @ ward6@tucsonaz.gov / something such as “what will you do to address the following…?”

The event is scheduled for 7pm – 9pm / 3233 E. Speedway / Loft Cinema.

Lisa Horner from Access Tucson has offered to tape the event to be re-run after the fact in order for those who can’t make it to give it a look. It’ll air on Saturdays at 11am and Sundays at 7pm starting Jan. 13th. Cox Channel 20/Comcast 74. There are technical reasons why they can’t air it live, but let’s hope this is the start of some community conversations that, through cooperation between all of our media partners we can book follow up meetings and get these things out over the air in real time in the days ahead.

Here’s the unofficial list of politicians who will be attending or sending a representative (if they don’t dare show up to be “roasted”):

Congressman Raul Grijalva (CD 3)
Congressman Ron Barber (CD 2)
State Senator Olivia Cajero Bedford (LD 3)
State Senator David Bradley (LD 10)
State Senator Steve Farley (LD 9)
State Representative Sally Ann Gonzales (LD 3)
State Representative Macario Saldate (LD 3)
State Representative Stefanie Mach (LD 10)
State Representative Bruce Wheeler (LD 10)
State Representative Ethan Orr (LD 9)
State Representative Victoria Steele (LD 9)
County Supervisor Richard Elias (D 5)
County Supervisor Sharon Bronson (D 3)
City – Mayor Jonathan Rothschild

My previous blog post announcing this event, with updates (click here). The list of politicians was created as those who have an impact on the issues of Ward 6 in the City of Tucson.

Due to threats of disruption about this event the Az Daily Star has reported (click here) that there will be no live microphone, no guns allowed, and bags will be checked. Doors open at 6 p.m. Questions can be submitted in writing at the community town hall.

From Ward 6 Councilman Steve Kozachik (aka “Steve K” or “Koz”) via his email newsletter of December 5, 2012:

Ward 6 Councilman Steve Kozachik

On January 8th, 2011, our community was forever changed.
With the tragic shootings, we came together and for a time embraced the phrase “Together We Thrive”. The emphasis was on
the word “together”.

Since that time, we have gone through three elections in which we elected people at the Federal, State, County and City levels. And it is my sense that the combined effect of politics, outside/big money and the passage of time is that we’re drifting back to the polarized bickering that prevents us from solving some of our fundamental community issues.

So, on January 7th, 2013, we’re going to reset the needle.
What I have done is to reserve The Loft Theater from 7pm until 9pm on that Monday evening. In addition, I have asked Dave Fitzsimmons to emcee/facilitate a Town Hall/Roast meeting. A huge thanks to both Peg Johnson for allowing me to use her facility, and to Fitz for agreeing to an evening in which up to 15 “politicians” will be seated near to him, potentially placing his sanity at risk.

Finally, I have made a personal call to invite every elected official who has anything to do with Ward 6 to come and take part in the event. Everybody has said that if their schedules permit, they’ll be there.
The invitees are our Federal, State, County and City representatives. They’re Democrats and Republicans. And every one of them is coming with the intent of showing that there really are some of us who want to work together for the greater good.

The format will evolve a bit between now and January 7th, but generally it will be a combination of some light sautéing of the elected officials by Fitz, and Q&A from the audience. This is our addressing issues that are meaningful to you in a serious manner, and doing so in an environment in which we won’t be allowed to take ourselves too seriously.
And I’m making sure that the event will be free to the public.

What I need from you is an RSVP so between me and Peg Johnson we can decide on which of her 3 theaters we’ll be using. They vary in seating capacity, but we’ll of course want to know that well in advance so she can use the remaining two for
movies. Please call The Loft at 795.0844, Ward 6 office at 791.4601, or email back to us so we can begin to do a head-count.

I’ll of course be giving some updates on the event between now and the 7th, but The Loft folks could use some time to do the advance planning – if you think you’ll be coming, let me know as soon as you feel you can commit.
I’m thankful to each of the elected men and women who have indicated an interest in participating
in the event. More on this in the weeks ahead.

The Loft Cinema is at 3233 E. Speedway, near the Ward 6 Council office, which is at 3202 E. 1st St.

The Ward 6 email is ward6@tucsonaz.gov, so please RSVP if you can make it on January 7, 2013. My husband and I have already done so, and we hope to see you Ward 6 residents, friends, etc. there for this “roast”. This will be a good event by “Koz” and “Fitz” to bring the Tucson community together again almost 2 years since the Tucson Tragedy shooting.

Republican Ward 6 Councilman Steve Kozachik was elected in Nov. 2009 defeating incumbent Democrat Nina Trasoff. He is up for re-election next year. He currently serves as Vice Mayor and his website is: http://cms3.tucsonaz.gov/wardsix.

12/12/12 UPDATE: From Steve K as which politicians are coming or sending a rep:

Congressman Raul Grijalva (CD 3)
Congressman Ron Barber (CD 2)
State Senator Olivia Cajero Bedford (LD 3)
State Senator David Bradley (LD 10)
State Senator Steve Farley (LD 9)
State Representative Sally Ann Gonzales (LD 3)
State Representative Macario Saldate (LD 3)
State Representative Stephanie (should be Stefanie) Mach (LD 10)
State Representative Bruce Wheeler (LD 10)
State Representative Ethan Orr (LD 9)
State Representative Victoria Steele (LD 9)
County Supervisor Richard Elias (D 5)
County Supervisor Sharon Bronson (D 3)
City – Mayor Jonathan Rothschild

That’s a lot of politicians in one room of the Loft Theater.

It took over 2 weeks to count all the early and provisional ballots cast in the General Election on November 6. Voter turnout statewide was 74.36%, higher at 77.98% in Pima County. The counting apparently took so long because many voters who received early ballots only turned them in on General Election Day, which slowed up the tallying process.

Prop. 409 Bonds for City Street Improvements (switched to winning side on Nov. 12, first time since Election Night. No votes to be counted 11/17/12 but counting of provisional ballots resumed on 11/18/12.) Final tally done 11/19/12 and Prop. 409 won by 953 votes.

YES 72,483
NO 71,530

The Congressional race in CD 2 has been very close and the lead has been switching back & forth, but Barber started leading on Nov. 10 and has declared victory, with McSally conceding on 11/17/12). Final tally done 11/19/12, Barber won by 2454 votes.

Ron Barber (D), incumbent CD 8, 147,338
Martha McSally (R) 144,884

I will continue to monitor the AZ Sec. of State website (click here) and the Pima County Elections Division website (click here) for updates on Prop. 118, Prop. 409 and CD 2.

Apparently in CD 1 Democratic former Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick has declared victory over Republican Jonathan Paton, who has conceded. Paton has now ran for Congress twice (in CD 8 and CD 2) and lost both races.

No change so far in who’s leading in other close races (and I will only update if there is any change of status):

LD 9 House (Republican Ethan Orr and Democrat Victoria Steele leading for 2 seats)

LD 10 House (Democrats Stefanie Mach & incumbent Bruce Wheeler leading for 2 seats)

PCC Governing Board District 5 (incumbent Marty Cortez leading for one seat)

TUSD Governing Board (Kristel Foster, incumbent Mark Stegeman, & Camy Juarez leading for 3 seats)

The other races appear to be decided, but stay tuned till the final & official count.

For my Election night posts, click here for the candidate tally, and here for the propositions tally, updated to 11/9/12 but for only the close races.

Arizona Citizens Clean Election Commission (CCEC) held debates between contested races in the Southern AZ legislative districts, with candidates participating in Clean Elections program and also those running traditionally. “Candidates who participate in Clean Elections to run for office are required to attend one debate in the general election unless they are running unopposed. Candidates who are not running with Clean Elections funding are allowed to join the debate, but their attendance is optional.”

Click on this link & go to the respective date to find the debate you’re interested in viewing. Mostly audience questions were asked at each debate so there were a wide range of questions and answers by these candidates.

http://www.cleanelections101.com/debates

LD 2 House race: September 20 — Chris John Ackerley (R), Andrea Dalessandro (D), Rosanna Gabaldon (D) – all three are Clean Elections candidates
State Senate seat in LD 2: Senator Linda Lopez (D, incumbent in LD 29) faces write-in opposition from Don Woolley (R) and there was no CCEC debate.

LD 11 House & Senate: September 24 — Senate: Jo Holt (D) vs. Al Melvin (R) – Holt is participating in Clean Elections
House: Dave Joseph (D), Steve Smith ( R) – Joseph is participating in Clean Elections. Adam Kwasman (R) is running traditionally so his presence was optional & he did not attend.

LD 9 House & Senate: October 4 — Senate: Steve Farley (D) vs. Tyler Mott (R) – Mott is a Clean elections candidate
House: Ethan Orr (R), Mohur Sarah Sidhwa (D), Victoria Steele (D) – Sidhwa is a Clean elections candidate

LD 10 House: October 10– Todd Clodfelter (R), Stefanie Mach (D), Ted Vogt (R), Bruce Wheeler (D) – only Clodfelter is a Clean elections candidate
State Senate seat in LD 10 has two candidates, both running traditionally, so no CCEC debate was held between Senator Frank Antenori (R, incumbent in LD 30) and David Bradley (D).

LD 14 House & Senate: October 10– Senate: Pat Fleming (D) vs. Gail Griffin (R) – Fleming is a Clean Elections candidate
House: David Gowan (R), Robert Leach (D), David Stevens (R), Mark Stonebraker (D) – Leach & Stonebraker are Clean Elections candidates. The 3 Republicans are running traditionally for the Senate and two House seats, and did not attend this debate as their presence was optional.

Being as early voting for the Nov. 6 general started on October 11, if you’re undecided, please view these videos to listen & consider whom to vote for in your Legislative District – one for State Senate, two for State House.

For more info about AZ CCEC go to www.azcleanelections.gov, to see list of participating candidates in the Clean Elections program.

The Debate schedule is here on their website for other legislative districts, including LD 14 Senate & House candidates on Sept. 26* in Benson, AZ. at the Benson City Council Chambers, 120 W. 6th St. In that race for Senate, incumbent Gail Griffin (R) of LD 25 is facing Pat Fleming (D). In the House race four men are vying for 2 seats: David Gowan (R) incumbent in LD 30, Robert Leach (D), David Stevens (R) incumbent in LD 25, and Mark Stonebraker (D).

*Update: This LD 14 debate moved to October 10, due to Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever’s memorial service.

In LD 10 House race, Bruce Wheeler and Ted Vogt are incumbents, currently serving as representatives in LD 28 and LD 30 respectively. In the LD 11 Senate race, Al Melvin is the incumbent State Senator in LD 26. Cynthia Miley is a Republican write-in candidate from the AZ Primary in LD 9 House, which is why her name has not appeared in previous posts.*

*10/5/12 update: No appearance by Republican Cynthia Miley at last night’s CCEC debate, someone announced that she was not on the ballot. Checked with AZ SOS website, and her name does not appear for LD 9 House.

Attend these debates to listen to these candidates, and vote wisely on or before Nov. 6. Early voting starts October 11.
