Creperie on 4th Avenue; Winter Street Fair coming up

kiwi-stawberry crepe, from their website

Vive la crepe, which is sold at stands all over France. But here in Tucson I think the only creperie place (which I know of) is Cafe Zope, 344 N. 4th Avenue (SE corner of E. 7th Street). They describe their crepes as the “most delicious, scrumptious, awesome, super fantastic, innovative crepes (European pancakes filled with yummy sweet or savory stuff).”

They have a wide assortment of sweet crepes like the kiwi-strawberry one pictured, as well as cinnamon sugar, apple sauce & cinnamon, Nutella (with banana or strawberry), lemon juice sugar, fresh fruit, pear/apple/brie & honey, etc., etc.
Nutella is a habit-forming chocolaty, hazelnut spread.

Then you can also try their Savory crepes such as the one I did: roasted chicken/lingonberries/spinach/tomato, served with a demitasse-sized cup of soup, and fresh greens. Next time I’ll try the chicken/pesto/tomato/spinach one for lunch or brunch. Or the salmon/chive cream/cheese roll crepe. (If you don’t know what lingonberry is, go try it out).

They also serve Swedish crepes and breakfast ones as well, and of course coffee, tea, espresso, chai latte, hot chocolate,Italian sodas, juices.

It’s also a cute coffee shop with 10 tables inside and 3 counters, 5 tables & a bench outside in their outdoors patio in the back. Black/white photographs adorn the pale pastel green or yellow walls, with wooden floors. I loved the 2 skylights overhead in this remodeled espresso coffee shop.

You can win a free crepe by going to their Facebook page and just hitting “like”.

www.cafezope.com, phone 520-623-3700. WiFi is available there. Hours of operation: Monday to Thursday, 8 to 4; Friday/Saturday/Sunday 8 to 6.

Check this cute coffee shop out during the 4th Avenue Winter Street Fair this coming weekend, December 10, 11, 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. Thousands of thousands of people usually turn out to shop (for holiday gifts), eat, enjoy life.

German spoken here

Monday, May 17th, 2010

I just found out that German is the 4th most spoken language in Arizona, following English (official), Spanish, and Navajo. It is taught at the University of Arizona (bachelor’s and master’s levels, with a Ph.D. in Transcultural German), and at Pima Community College (bachelor’s degree) at three campuses: Downtown, West, and Northwest.

The German language is also taught at least at eight high schools in Tucson: Amphi, Canyon del Oro, Cholla, Empire, Flowing Wells, Mountain View, Rincon, and University High.

On the elementary school level, I believe the only offering in bilingual German/English is at the private, well renowned International School of Tucson, at 1730 N. First Ave. Ages taught at that school are 3 to 11.

German Americans were some of the earliest immigrants to America, and now comprise 17% (2000 census) of the U.S. population, over 51 million people. But that probably doesn’t account for inter-marriage, prevalant nowadays.

German is spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, parts of America, and a little in Luxembourg, Alsace and Lorraine (both in France), a little in Denmark, a solid group in Romania and Russia, and in southern Brazil, Peru, and Argentina.

I myself am married to a Native German professor and it has opened up my world to an appreciation of the German language and culture. I’ve audited German 101 and 102 at the University of Arizona (German Studies Dept.), and have studied German informally as well.

Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Ja, ein bisschen.
(Do you speak German? Yes, a little).
