From deadly border to national park

Friday, April 15th, 2011

PROFESSOR ALBRECHT CLASSEN (University Distinguished Professor in German Studies at University of Arizona, Native German – who grew up in West Germany near the East German border)

presents:

FROM THE DEADLY EAST GERMAN BORDER INTO NATIONAL PARKS:
LIFE RETURNS AND DEFIES ALL BORDERS!

Throughout history, borders have always represented civilization’s most problematic issues, and there have been deadly borders, such as the one between East Germany and West Germany, complete with countless mines, wire fences, watch towers, and guards. Numerous people died trying to cross this no-man’s land between the two countries. In 1989, unification opened the border. The land was cleared and left to itself, and over time, nature reclaimed and transformed what was once a long death strip into a green zone of national parks.

The Pima County Republican Party is hosting a series of free campaign workshops/classes in the Spring and Fall.

Upcoming at Himmel Park branch library (1035 N. Treat Ave., SW corner of E. 1st St.)

“Christina Cruz heads up Internet Services for Tagline Media Group in Tucson. Christina has worked on campaigns in and around Pima County.”

Next workshop on “How to run a Campaign” will be on Sat. May 28, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Udall Park Center by Sam Stone of Cairn Consulting. Udall Park Center is at 7290 E. Sam Stone of Cairn Consulting, L.L.C. has been the campaign manager for several GOP candidates in the past. Sam has an extensive knowledge of campaigning especially in media relations. Sam is currently the media relations and communications consultant to the Pima County Republican Party.

And I believe that Stone is assisting Mayoral candidate Shaun McClusky’s campaign.

Please RSVP by at least the Thursday prior to the specific class or classes that you plan to attend. Email your response to RSVP@PimaGOP.org or call Pima GOP HQ at 520-321-1492 to be added to the class.

McClusky and former Pima County Supervisor Ron Asta are facing off in the Mayoral Republican primary on August 30.

Recently the Tucson Weekly posted a video ad from Asta regarding his causing a traffic fatality in 1994: http://www.tucsonweekly.com/TheRange/archives/2011/03/28/ron-asta-wonders-should-i-stay-or-should-i-go. The AZ Daily Star also ran an article about whether Asta should stay in the race: http://azstarnet.com/news/blogs/pueblo-politics/article_990ae250-5a29-11e0-b33e-001cc4c002e0.html

Sam Hughes Neighborhood Home Tour on March 13

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

The Sam Hughes Neighborhood Association (SHNA), in the Sam Hughes National Historic District, will present their home tour on Sunday, March 13 from 12-5 p.m.

The neighborhood, just east of the University of Arizona and anchored by Rincon Market and Himmel Park, will “feature a variety of home styles, gardens, artist studios, and new neighborhood businesses that will serve refreshments.” The latest update states that the tour will include “five houses, three home art studios, three non-profits (which will receive proceeds from our raffle), and three restaurants — new to the neighborhood.

Sam Hughes neighborhood boundaries are Campbell Ave. /Country Club Blvd. and Speedway Blvd./Broadway Blvd.

I’ve been on this tour in prior years and some of these historic, charming homes are gorgeous. New this year: black aprons with the Sam Hughes logo (it’s an embroidered strip depicting the varied housing styles here) will be on sale, made by one of the artists on the tour.

Proceeds from the tour (held every other year) go to neighborhood projects, but proceeds from the raffle will be divided among Himmel Park Branch Library, Literacy Volunteers of Tucson, and Tucson Alliance for Autism — which are on the tour in the neighorhood, and serving refreshments.

Admission: $15 ticket, $10 ticket for 2011 Sam Hughes Neighborhood Association members (dues must be current for discount).

Pre-purchase of tickets: Seven Cups (tea house), 2516 E. 6th St., March 6-12, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.: pm. Ph. 520-881-4072. Cash or checks only.

Purchase of tickets on day of tour: Rincon Market, 2513 E. 6th St. in front patio, March 13, 9-4 pm. Ph. 520-327-6653.

Contact info: 520-323-7891 or johnden43@hotmail.com. Also, see SHNA website www.samhughes.org for updates.

The lovely home pictured below in the poster will be on this self-guided tour, and the photo was taken by Geraldo Garcia of Solaris Photography, located at 2508 E. 6th Street in the Sam Hughes Neighborhood.
