Today’s Food for Thought presentation:

Tracing History through Mexican-American Newspapers presented by Chris Kollen, Mary Feeney, and Verónica Reyes-Escudero

What voice did Mexican-American newspapers provide during critical time periods in U.S. history, as Mexican-Americans fought for justice, equality, and human rights? What was daily life like for Mexican-Americans? The University of Arizona Libraries’ Historic Mexican-American Newspapers online project documents and showcases historic Mexican and Mexican-American newspapers published in Tucson, El Paso, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Hermosillo, Mexico, from the late 1800s to the early 1970s. This collection aims to raise awareness of issues that affected Mexican-Americans, as well as demonstrate their contributions to the United States, particularly along the U.S. Mexican border. The presentation will describe the project and provide examples of the types of information available through this website.

For those attending the program a two-hour free parking validation is available for the garage directly below the library. All are invited to bring their lunches for these free programs.

I’ve attended several of these Food for Thought lectures in the past, and they are informative and definitely thought-provoking.
