Last night Kimberly Craft of KUAT Channel 6 AZ Illustrated interviewed both TUSD Board President Dr. Mark Stegeman and attorney Richard Martinez, who represents the 11 Mexican American Studies teachers in a federal lawsuit (See ethnicstudies.org).

The lawsuit is challenging the constitutionality of the recent state law (originally HB 2281) which governs the ethnic studies curriculum in the State of Arizona. Martinez also says that the proposed resolution put on the TUSD Governing Board agenda for April 26 by Dr. Stegeman is premature, pending the audit/investigation currently being undertaken by the AZ Dept. of Education and the pending federal lawsuit.

View the 12 minute KUAT interview (click here), or view it below:

Read Dr. Stegeman’s open letter to the public in response to the student “takeover” (by a youth-formed coalition called Unidos) of the April 26 board meeting (click here).

Stay tuned for date/time/place of this re-scheduled board meeting. Initial reports state that the meeting has been set for May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) at 5:30 p.m. at Catalina High School, but blogger 3 Sonorans has reported that the date has been changed to Tuesday May 3. I’m awaiting confirmation from the Director of Staff Services for the TUSD Governing Board. Catalina Magnet High School is at 3645 E. Pima Street (just west of Dodge Blvd.)

UPDATE: 3 Sonorans & AZ Daily Star reporting that this re-scheduled meeting has been changed to Tuesday, May 3, 5:30 p.m. back at TUSD Admnistrative office, 1010 E. 10th St.
Star article has information on the security measures to be taken:

On March 3 KUAT Channel 6 host Kimberly Craft interviewed the two Republicans now running for Mayor of the City of Tucson (from their website, www.azpm.org):

Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup has announced that he will not run for another term. Now the field of those hoping to replace him is getting crowded.

Two more contenders have announced their candidacy. They are former county supervisor Ron Asta and Shaun McClusky, who has run previously for city council and was a strong opponent of raising city sales taxes in the last election. Both Republicans, they explain their reasons for running and the objectives they hope to accomplish, including making the landscape better for business and retaining young people to assume well-paying jobs.

My previous blogs on Shaun McClusky (click here), and Ron Asta (click here). McClusky ran for the Ward 5 Council seat in November, 2009 and Ron Asta is a prior District 1 Pima County Supervisor.

The only Democrat (so far) who has filed to run for Mayor is political newcomer/attorney Jonathan Rothschild. His interview by Craft on KUAT was on January 28 (click here).

McClusky and Asta will be speaking to the Eastside Republicans on March 16, along with the Ward 4 Council candidate Tyler Vogt, at the Golf Links branch library, 9640 E.

The four candidates running for Tucson United School District (T.U.S.D.) Governing Board were interviewed by Kimberly Craft for KUAT AZ Illustrated, to air at 6:30 p.m tonight on Channel 6. The four are: Adelija Grijalva (incumbent), Michael Hicks, Miguel Ortega, and Armand Salese.

I reported on these candidates on August 5 (click here), before the fifth candidate Dr. Cassandra Bolden was later found ineligible (click here) due to less than the required signatures (400) on her petition.

The KUAT interview online consisted of 4 questions to all four candidates:

1. What are your objectives in seeking this position?
2. How do you intend to improve the quality of students’ education?
3. What qualities are you looking for in a new Superintendent?
4. How do you aim to improve the district’s image and improve the relationship with the community?

To view this interview on KUAT, click here or view it below. This election for 2 seats will be on November 2nd ballot (General Election).
