Jesuit Priest Father Eusebio Francisco Kino was the first European to map the region of modern day Southern Arizona and Northern Sonora. His definitive Pimeria Alta map that located many now familiar historic landmarks was completed in 1702. Father Kino died March 15, 1711 in Magdalena, Mexico (Discovery Date and Time: March 15, 9:30 a.m.)

Today March 15, 2013, exactly 302 years after Padre Kino’s death many of us gathered at the Gutierrez Bridge before 9:30 a.m. to watch the sun shine through the image of one of the San Xavier del Bac Mission towers laser-cut in the shade canopy over the bridge, to align with that history and map embossed into the sidewalk along the pedestrian walkway. (You really have to see it to believe it, as I did on February 19, 2013 when I watched the shadow of the propeller blade image on the canopy align with pioneer Charles Hamilton’s bi-plane embossed image on the pavement.)

He worked with bridge artist Brenda Semanick on this creation.

Attorney Mark O’Hare of the Kino Heritage Society passed out copies today of Padre Kino’s map of the Pimeria Alta, and info on an E-book which is on their website. The book is entitled “Padre Kino and the Trail to the Pacific”. Also on their website is a link about the newest book of the German Jesuit missionaries written by my husband UA Distinguished Professor Albrecht Classen, “Early History of the Southwest Through the Eyes of German-Speaking Jesuit Missionaries, A Transcultural Experience in the Eighteenth Century”.

Two Mission Tours by The Docents of Patronato San Xavier – Tour 45 minutes
The mission tours by the Patronato are conducted daily and are opened to the public. The Patronato San Xavier is a nonsectarian, nonprofit organization founded by Southern Arizona community leaders in 1978 to promote the restoration, maintenance and preservation of Mission, a National Historic Landmark. The docents are volunteers from the community, trained in the history, architecture, and culture of the Mission San Xavier and its surroundings. See www.patronatosansavier.org.

She relates the mission’s history, architecture and statuary and other art and the efforts of the international team of conservators to preserve it. The San Xavier Mission and the Kino Heritage Society are joining with communities across Sonora and Arizona during the month of May by having the Kino Festival at the San Xavier Mission on Saturday afternoon May 19th from 12:30 to 4:30 pm.

Our Festival is part of the regional celebrations in Arizona and Sonora from May 16th to May 20th that honor the life of Jesuit missionary and explorer Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino.

The Tubac Presidio State Historical Park (Friday May 18 to Sunday May 20) and the Tumacacori National Historical Park (Wednesday May 16- Special Mission Guevavi and Calabasas Tour; Thursday May 17 Events at Park Headquarters) are also participating and having their own Kino Festivals.

German Jesuit Missionaries as Founders of Sonora/Arizona, presented by University of Arizona professor Dr. Albrecht Classen, is also sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council and is also a program celebrating Arizona’s Centennial.

Description: It is commonly thought that the early history of Pimeria Alta (now Sonora/Arizona) was determined by Spanish colonizers.

Dr. Albrecht Classen explains how in reality, the Jesuit Order can be credited with having had the greatest impact on the entire region. An example is Padre Eusebio Kino. A surprisingly large number of his successors hailed from German speaking lands and left a huge impact on the early history of the Southwest. This presentation illuminates the historical background of the Jesuit Order and traces the path of major representative of German Jesuit missionaries to the Pimeria Alta.

Moreover, it will bring to light some of the most recent research that is intensifying as major collections of original texts/letters are being translated into English. The audience will have a chance to gain insight into the global role which the Jesuits played, and how important the Sonoran province was for the international Jesuit Order.

This talk is by my husband, who has published about a dozen scholarly articles about Padre Kino and other Jesuits in Arizona, has given this talk at libraries in Pima County and Arizona, at Agua Caliente Park‘s Historic Lecture Series, and to other civil groups. He has also published an online translation of letters by Jesuit Father Philipp Segesser, and is now working on a book about the German speaking Jesuits. He will be a presenter at an upcoming November, 2012 symposium on Padre Kino, hosted by the Kino Heritage Society in Tucson.

Swiss Jesuit missionary Philipp Segesser (1689 to 1762) followed famous Jesuit missionary Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino (1645 to 1711) into the Pimeria Alta of Southern Arizona (18th- century Sonora, Mexico).

His letters in Swiss German (mostly to his family in Lucerne) have been read and translated by my husband German Studies University Distinguished Professor Albrecht Classen. Quote below from the summary intro:

The early history of Sonora/Arizona (Pimeria Alta) was profoundly influenced and determined by the Jesuit missionaries from Europe. After Padre Eusebio Kino’s death in 1711, an increasing number of German-speaking Jesuits arrived in our region and soon dominated the entiry missionary district. We have known so far well about the Fathers Ignaz Pfefferkorn or Joseph Och.

The Swiss Philipp Segesser, one of the most effective, pragmatic, and industrious members of the Jesuit Order active here in the Southwest, has not yet been fully noticed because his large collection of letters have never been translated into English.

Segesser’s reports about his daily life in our region, his insightful observations about local agriculture, fauna, flora, climate, and geology, and his numerous comments about the native Indians, their life styles, clothing, food, hunting habits, religion, and culture at large prove to be most intriguing and fascinating.

The introduction and excerpts of letters (translated into English) of a forthcoming book* are now online at his webpage at:

The pictures above are worth a thousand words (from me). I recently enjoyed an art show at this renovated Bates Mansion, which is a fabulous place downtown. It’s at the old Mountain Oyster Club locale, on the SW corner of Stone Avenue and Franklin. Enjoy this fiesta!

Last night I attended the preview opening of a special exhibit “Our Padre on Horseback” honoring the 300th anniversary of the death of Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino, S.J. (1645 to 1711), at the Diocese of Tucson Archives at 300 S. Tucson Blvd. The exhibit itself depicts 16 of the 24 missions that Padre Kino founded, with photos, maps, drawings and several lovely Ted DeGrazia reprints. Last night Bishop Gerald Kicanas and Father Chris Corbally spoke of the work of Padre Kino and the Kino Heritage Society. Father Corbally aptly said that Kino “used all his knowledge and survival skills to bring people to God”. Padre Kino is remembered as a “Missionary & Explorer, Friend of Native Peoples, Founder of 24 missions, Scientist & Map maker, Candidate for Sainthood, and Arizona’s First Cattleman.”

This exhibit will run through May 30, 2011, hours of operation M, T, TH, F from 9 to 4 p.m., phone 520-886-5201. (The archives bldg. is at the south end of this property shared with St. Ambrose Parish & School.)

The 2011 parade and Festival theme, “Everyday Heroes,” will center on local, national and world personalities that have made a positive difference in the lives of those they touch.

The parade will feature marchers including floats, military units, local dignitaries, media and entertainment personalities and civic, cultural and social groups. The Tucson parade has a 24-year history and provides a good time for the entire family.

This year’s Grand Marshal is Dr. Peter Rhee, UMC trauma surgeon.

We will also have representatives from TPD, TFD, several local hospitals, EMT’s, first responders, social workers, care workers, as well as scores of Tucson teachers represented. Come out and help the Irish community show support and recognize our wonderful hard working men and women of Tucson!

The Honorary Grand Marshal for this year’s parade is Father Eusebio Francisco Kino. This year marks the 300th anniversary of his passing. Father Kino was well known for his ability to create relationships between indigenous peoples and the religious institutions he represented. He fought hard for the rights of the various Sonoran tribes and their individual members. He opposed the slavery and compulsory hard labor in the silver mines. Kino also practiced other crafts and was an expert astronomer, mathematician and cartographer, who drew the first accurate maps of Pemeria Alta, the Gulf of California and Baja California. Truly an Everday Hero!

In memory of the more than one million Irish who died in the Potato Famine 150 years ago, marchers and spectators are asked to remember the hungry of Tucson. The Community Food Bank will accept canned food donations at the parade line-up
area, along the parade route and at Armory Park during the Festival.

The one hour Parade will begin at 5:30PM on 14th & Stone Avenue, wind through Downtown – Congress, Broadway and 6th Street- ending at Armory Park.

The Korean American community in Tucson is very proud of Dr. Rhee, who treated Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the other shooting victims who were brought to University Medical Center on January 8. He is a Professor at the University of Arizona Medical School, and did his residency at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center (General Surgery).

It will move on to include music set to Pima Indian texts, since Padre Kino worked closely with the Native Americans.
