Since its inception, Aviva Children’s Services has existed to improve the lives of children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and poverty and are in the care of Child Protective Services (CPS). Aviva began in 1978 after the local Tucson newspaper ran a series of articles revealing serious inadequacies in Arizona’s foster care system. In the next few years, Aviva grew from a loosely organized group of volunteers to one of the largest providers of service to children in the care of Child Protective Services. In 1999 Aviva was incorporated as a nonprofit in the State of Arizona.

THE CITY OF SOUTH TUCSON PRESENTS:
A Healthy Habits Community-Wide Health Fair

DATE: Saturday, January 21, 2012
TIME: 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM (Bike/Walk/Run begins at 8:30 AM)
LOCATION: The Arizona’s Children Association Campus, 2700 South 8th Avenue

The City of South Tucson will be hosting its first Healthy Habits Community Fair on Saturday, January 21, 2012! Studies increasingly suggest that health disparities among children and families disproportionately affect lower-income, traditionally-underserved, and high-minority population communities, and the City of South Tucson is home to many in these subgroups. While it is truly unfortunate that the City is no exception to such a fact, this does not mean that its citizens are helpless to do anything about reversing negative trends through prevention and action. In helping to prompt such a turnaround, it is incumbent upon its civic and community leaders to come together in the spirit of collaboration in order to spark a community-wide effort to inform and educate our neighbors, and initiate changes in personal habits that reflect a more healthy and active lifestyle.

The City of South Tucson is proud to partner with its co-sponsors ReActivate New & Used Activewear, the Arizona’s Children Association, Pima County Health Department, Community Partnership of Southern Arizona, and Tucson Youth Development who helped make this event possible; and is excited to announce that the following organizations will be providing information, demonstrations, and tips on how to lead a more active lifestyle: Pima County Public Library, Pima County Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety, the House of Neighborly Service, the John Valenzuela Youth Center, Mission View Elementary & Ochoa Community Magnet Schools, University of Arizona/Pima County Cooperative Extension, the University of Arizona REACH Program, University of Arizona Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health – Canyon Ranch Center, University of Arizona Mexican American Studies, Pima Community College, Primavera Foundation, Tucson Indian Center, the American Cancer Society, the Cortiva Institute, Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona, Ha:san Preparatory Leadership School, Healthy Choice Arizona, the Healthy O’odham Promotion Program, Kool Smiles, Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Simon Med Imaging, Soreo Select, Tucson Health Coaches, the South Tucson Community Garden Network, NextCare Urgent Care, St Elizabeth’s Health Center, Pima Kids Connection, and HOPE Inc.

We have teamed up with these community groups to bring awareness to the South Tucson area by promoting and encouraging healthy habits in an effort to combat and inform families about chronic illnesses including obesity, stroke, type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. Come out and join your friends, family and neighbors for a FREE day-long event focusing on nutrition, women’s health, healthy food preparation, diabetes prevention and information, first aid, self-gardening, pilates/yoga/massage, dental care, exercise, weight management, health-related professions, sports activities, and bicycling. Also join us for a fun bike/walk/run, dedication of the new Mission View Playgrounds, raffle prizes, giveaways, and more!

“Get out! Get Moving! Get Healthy!”

For more information, contact South Tucson Mayor Jennifer Eckstrom at (520) 792-2424, or Lydia Kennedy, owner of ReActivate New & Used Activewear at (520) 325-4295.

ReActivate™ – A New & Used Activewear Store in Tucson, Arizona.

ReActivate™ began with a simple vision to create a buy, sell, trade sportswear store. In response to the abundance of quality activewear discarded during the course of various events as athletes warmed up through the progression of their races, the founders of ReActivate™ saw an opportunity to reduce, reuse, and recycle. They were inspired by a passion for sports and healthy living, a drive to promote fitness in people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, and a desire to be responsible stewards of the environment to create a unique resale store that just focused on activewear at reasonable prices.

Nov. 6, 2011, ReActivate is volunteering at “Healthiest Town In America” event from 8am-2pm. The Healthiest Town in America will “educate and inform the general public on the recognition, prevention, and reversal of Obesity, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular Diseases.”
(They are looking for volunteers to help with tent set up, registration, giving out buttons and assisting vendors).

Nov. 12, 2011, ReActivate is participating with UofA, Arizona State Museum Health Fair, “Through The Eyes of the Eagle: A Healthy Celebration” from 8:30am-3pm, to “raise awareness about type 2 diabetes prevention from a Native American perspective.” http://www.statemuseum.arizona.edu/exhibits/eyes_of_the_eagle/index.shtml

I dropped by this new store (opened Feb.2011) and spoke with the founding owner Lydia Kennedy who has a passion for sports & athletics, & fighting obesity in America. I just heard on the radio that 2 out of 3 Americans is considered overweight. Lydia’s father Robert at one time weighed 400 lbs, and she helped him to lose lots of weight through exercise and diet, down to 160 lbs. She was on her Salpointe Catholic High School soccer and track teams, and then worked in sports rehab and human resources jobs. And now her goal is to help educate Tucsonans to become healthier, thinner, and to recycle their activewear.

Lydia Kennedy jogging, courtesy of the ReActivate

Besides jogging, Lydia also enjoys cycling, yoga, hiking, strength training, P90X, cross training, shooting baskets. She embodies athleticism and staying fit.

And according to Daniel Geffre (writer/producer for Authentic Productions here in Tucson, Arizona) –”ReActivate has donated over 125 items to the homeless including: jackets, sweatshirts, gloves, beanies and gloves. To give a few examples, ReActivate participated at The Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathon by sponsoring a group of 8 people with ReActivate T-Shirts and hosting an exhibit booth. As well as being apart of the youth. In May 5th of 2011, they helped by partnering with the Tucson Youth Development/ACE Charter High School to put on a free health fair.”
