Bill Buckmaster moved his radio show to KVOI “The Voice”

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Radio talk show host (and former Arizona Public Media Channel 6 talk show host) Bill Buckmaster has moved his radio show to KVOI, 1030 AM “The Voice”. He started this radio interview-driven show, The Buckmaster Show, earlier this year in January on KJLL 1330 AM. His new show on KVOI started on June 1 and will be at high noon, weekdays and simulcast in Globe and Douglas, Arizona.

His first guests were three Republicans — Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce, facing a historic recall with over 18,000 signatures submitted by the Recall Pearce campaign, then District 4 Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll and Ward 6 Councilman Steve Kozachik–the latter two were interviewed about the County and City budgets. They were followed by General John Wickham on Libya. Listen to the interviews (click here).

On June 2 Buckmaster interviewed Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup (who is in his 3rd term and not running for re-election), Congresswoman “Gabby” Giffords’ staffer Mark Kimble (former Associate Editor of the Tucson Citizen), RTA Executive Director Gary Hayes, and lastly legal advisor Donald Loose, Esq. about the new medical marijuana laws. Listen to these interviews (click here).

And if you want to hear previous interviews when Bill Buckmaster was on KJLL radio, log onto www.buckmastershow.com. If you miss any of his upcoming interviews on KVOI, log onto the same website.

Farewell Gabe Zimmerman, Congresswoman Giffords’ aide

Gabe Zimmerman

I knew Gabe Zimmerman (Director of community outreach) and I wept over reading about his senseless killing yesterday at the Safeway on Oracle/Ina, when his employer CD 8 Congresswoman Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffords was also shot in the head allegedly by Jared Lee Loughner (who is in custody). 19 people were injured in the shooting, 6 have died.

Apparently former Tucson Citizen Associate Editor Mark Kimble (who now works for Gabby as a speech writer) was there as well, helping with constituents, but he was not injured.

Also shot and injured were Gifford’s District Director Ron Barber and part-time outreach coordinator Pam Simon. I just met Pam at an Arizona Women’s Political Caucus holiday event in December, when she spoke on Gabby’s behalf (click here). Both are recovering at University Medical Center here in Tucson.

More here at AZ Central about Gifford’s aides:

Gabe was with Congresswoman Giffords from the beginning as a field organizer during her first campaign back in 2006. I remember how thrilled he was to then become part of her local Tucson staff, and I’ve communicated off and on with him since then. And the news article says he was engaged to be married. He was only 30 years old when he was killed yesterday. He was a great guy, very dedicated and passionate about helping constituents, in representing the Congresswoman.

A private memorial service has been scheduled for January 15. I also serve on the Casitas of Broadway board with his mother Emily Nottingham, retired City of Tucson community services administrator. Heartfelt condolences to the Ross Zimmerman family.

And pray for Gabby, who’s still in critical condition in the ICU (intensive care unit) following brain surgery at University Medical Center, on Campbell Avenue. She is married to NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, and has two step daughters Claudia and Claire Kelly.

List of the other deceased victims, most of whom were Giffords’ constituents apparently waiting in line to speak with her at her “Congress on Your Corner” event:
(There are a few discrepancies in the names of these victims, with the news coming in so quickly since yesterday’s shooting).

-John Roll, 63, a federal district court judge (Chief Judge in U.S. District Court for AZ)

- Dorwan Stoddard, 76, a volunteer at Mountain Ave. Church of Christ (his wife Mavanell was also shot & injured, but is expected to recover)

-Christina-Taylor Green, 9, a student at Mesa Verde Elementary

-Dorothy Morris, 76 (not Murray as originally reported)

-Phyllis Schneck, 79, a retiree from the East Coast

Condolences to all the families of these innocent victims.

Where have all the Tucson Citizen staffers gone?

Friday, May 14th, 2010

A year ago the 138 year old Tucson Citizen newspaper ceased publication (print edition), but is very much alive online as Tucsoncitizen.com. Where have all the former 65 reporters/staffers gone since then?Tucson Citizen paper

One of the Citizen’s investigative reporters Renee Schafer Horton who has a blogsite here at Tucsoncitizen.com (“God Blogging and more”), wrote an article on “Where are they now?” in this week’s Tucson Weekly (page 15, May 13, 2010 issue). You can read it online here.

She writes about what happened to Carli Brosseau (pictured in the Weekly article),
and other reporters/staffers including MJ McVay, Rogelio Olivas, Lorrie Brownstone, Jennifer Boice, Tom Stauffer, Judy Carlock, Steve Rivera (now “Steve Rivera Ventures” here at Tucsoncitizen.com).

Renee has finished up her teacher certification coursework and will be student teaching at Salpointe Catholic High School in the fall.

Dan Buckley is running his own video company, www.danielbuckleyproductions.com, and I just saw him on Monday May 10, video taping Cele’s Peterson’s memorial service at the U of A Poetry Center.

Dylan Smith & Mike Truelsen have launched the Tucsonsentinel.com (“news, info & commentary”), online only. Jennifer Boice is on their board of directors, along with Michael Chihak, former publisher.

I recently heard former Associate Editor Mark Kimble again on the radio, as he works as an aide to CD 8 Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords at her Tucson district office.

Does anyone know what happened to Garry Duffy, the political reporter who acted on the side as wizard Zoggog at the Valley of the Moon? I toured that fantasy land on Saturday and wondered about his whereabouts.

Of course Mark Evans and Ryn Gargulinski have been competently co-editing this online “The Voice of Tucson”, at Tucsoncitizen.com for a year now. And former cartoonist Arnie Bermudez just joined us recently with his own “Bermudez Shorts” blogsite. Sports writers Andy Morales (“High School Sports with Andy Morales”) and Anthony Gimino (“AG’s Wildcat Report”) have been blogging here since July and September, respectively.

I was a “My Tucson” guest columnist (under a Work for Hire contract) for 2008-2009 and continued blogging for the Tucsoncitizen.com after the demise of the print version. I still remember the shock when Gannett, Inc. announced in January, 2009 that the Tucson Citizen newspaper, which had been continuously publishing since 1870, would cease publication. At that time, the concept of “citizen journalists” continuing this news resource online as “The Voice of Tucson” was novel. Two other former “My Tucson” columnists, Elizabeth “BJay” Woolley (“BJay’s Work from Home Experience”) and Don Smith (“Fort Buckley”) are occasionally writing here as well.

Many of these former Citizen staffers had a float (actually a “Press Corpse” coffin) at the All Souls’ Procession parade on November 8, 2009. I’ve linked to Ryn’s slide show of that procession, including photo # 40 of former Citizen staffer Val Canez with an “Our epitaph” tshirt & sign.

R.I.P. Tucson Citizen print newspaper, a year later.

“Gone, but not forgotten.”
