Meet and Greet the Green Party Primary Candidates for Mayor

Mary DeCamp and Dave Croteau

at La Indita Restaurant (Mexican/Latin American cuisine)
622 N. Fourth Ave in Tucson (north of E. 5th Street)

Every Monday at 6:30pm

If you’re a registered Green Party voter in the City of Tucson, or an Independent who registered by July 16 to vote in that primary on/before August 30, here’s your weekly chance to meet & talk with either or both Green candidates.

Previous blogs on Dave Croteau (click here) and Mary DeCamp (click here).

This is Croteau’s 3rd bid for Mayor having run before as a write-in candidate in 1999 and as the Green Party candidate in 2007, challenging Republican Mayor Bob Walkup when no Democrat ran.

DeCamp ran for the Ward 3 City Council seat two years ago in 2009 and lost to Democratic incumbent Councilwoman Karin Uhlich.

If you can’t drop by La Indita, then view these 2 Green Mayoral candidates on Friday’s KUAT Channel 6 interview: http://ondemand.azpm.org/videoshorts/watch/2011/7/22/1830-green-would-be-mayors-tout-first-primary/.

For more information on the Green Party of Pima County, go to their website, www.pimagreens.org. This is apparently the first Green Party primary for Mayor. Another Green candidate Beryl Baker just filed to run as a write-in candidate for the Ward 1 Council seat. She ran for the same seat in 2007 and lost to Regina Romero, the current Councilmember.

Also running for Mayor:
–Democrat Jonathan Rothschild and 3 Democratic write-in candidates, David Karr, Joseph Maher Jr. and Rich Kessler — all political newcomers
–Republican write-in candidate Rick Grinnell – who’s run unsuccessfully for the Ward 2 City Council seat before in 1995 and 1999. He also sought to be appointed to that vacant seat last Spring, 2010 when Councilman Rodney Glassman resigned to run for the U.S. Senate.
–Political newcomer Daryl Peterson, also a Republican write-in candidate

Thomas Lawrence Lombardi — a Democratic political newcomer and a Hall Monitor at Mountain View High School — has filed to run for the Mayor of Tucson. The Tucson City Clerk lists all the 6 potential contenders (click here).

However, according to Chris Roads (Pima County Deputy Recorder & Registrar of Voters) at Pima County Recorder’s Office, the current address (3650 North Four Winds Drive 85750) that Lombardi lists is in the County, not the City of Tucson. Lombardi has voted at that address in August and November 2010, having changed to that County address in May 2009 from a City address (5326 E. 5th Street).

No bio/photo of Lombardi available despite 2 phone requests since 4/8/11 and a promise by the candidate to send them via email by 4/11/11. I will update this blog when I receive further information.

So far running for Mayor:

Ron Asta, Republican, land planner, radio talk show host (KJLL), former District 1 Pima County Supervisor (then a Democrat)

Marshall Home, Democrat, billionaire “patriot not a politician”

Shaun McClusky, Republican, realtor, former Ward 5 Council candidate

Jon McLane, Green, businessman, radio talk show host (KVOI)

Jonathan Rothschild, Democrat, attorney

For a previous blog “KUAT Interviews: The Men Who Would be Mayor” click here. (You can view the five men listed above– sans Lombardi in TV interviews.)

Jon McLane is facing a problem with his voter registration as well, as he may not have lived in the City of Tucson for 3 years prior to filing for Mayor in March. Stay tuned for determinations on McLane and Lombardi. The deadline for petitions by these candidates is June 1st, and the primary election will be on August 30.

Candidate Qualifications – Tucson Charter Chapter XVI Section 5
A candidate for Mayor or Council Member must have been a qualified elector (registered voter) and resident of the City of Tucson for not less than (3) years immediately prior to becoming a candidate.

UPDATE: Lombardi has withdrawn per City Clerk’s office website of 5/6/11.

In 2001, at 18 years of age Jon moved to Tucson, where he attended Pima Community College before and after joining the Army. Jon also at this time turned Clear Vue Pools in to Clear Vue Landscaping & Pools, which focused on pool and landscape maintenance, repairs, and light construction.

Jon was a fuel and water chemist in the Army, and served 18 months in Operation Iraqi Freedom starting in 2003. Jon’s primary duties while stationed overseas were fuel and water inspection, mission tracking, base talent show host, base swimming pool renovations. After returning from Iraq Jon turned both the pool company and landscape company he owned into conservation companies, after seeing the effects of limited resources in Iraq. In 2009 Jon wrote a manual on Water Conservation Methods and Principles for outside use, a one of a kind in the world, with the assistance of several local municipal officials and local business men. (http://greenrevolutionradio.com/content/water-conservation-manual). The manual is intended for mass publication via internet sites for swimming pool owners. Since starting his water conservation campaign Jon has personally saved over 10 million gallons of water throughout Tucson.

Also, in 2005 Jon created an advertising and marketing company, by the name 1st advertising and marketing, designed to cater to small businesses and focus on applying 21st century technology.

Jon is a Host on Green Revolution Radio, originally FREEgreen Radio, which has been operating since mid 2010. Past guests on the show included: Fernando Molina (Tucson Water), Custom Solar & Leisure, Southern Arizona Rain Gutters, Solar Gain, Clean Water Products, Fast Lane Auto, Green Works, Safe home consultants, Arizona Rain Gardens, Green Geeks, Amazing Tees, Arizona Party Rentals, Audio Visual Management, Ekonomy Pools, Ordinary bikes, and Eco Underwater Pool Repair.

Jonathan Rothschild, a Democratic attorney born & raised in Tucson who has never held public office before, filed his official papers for Mayor of the City of Tucson today at the City Clerk’s Office. A statement of organization for his Exploratory Committee for Mayor was filed back in July, 2010.

He held a fundraiser on December 7 at Etherton Gallery (click here) after I first reported about his exploratory committee back in September (click here).

He said today in a press release:

“Tucson needs a mayor who will get the job done,” Rothschild said. “All the things we’ve talked about for years, from economic development to downtown revitalization, need to get done and done responsibly. We’re coming through tough economic times.Tucsonans don’t expect things to come easy. They know it will be hard, but they expect results.”

In Tucson, competing interests have often clashed, with the unfortunate result of nothing being done and everyone being frustrated. Rothschild has spent a 30-year career in law at the head of a negotiating table, bringing people together, finding the shared interests of all involved and coming up with workable solutions. “We need leadership willing to tackle challenges head-on and make the city of Tucson what Tucsonans deserve,” Rothschild said. “We must put our differences aside and come together. That’s how we build a better Tucson.”

Former Ward 5 Council candidate Republican Shaun McClusky has already announced his intention to seek this Mayoral seat (click here).

No word yet from 3 term Republican Mayor Bob Walkup whether he will seek re-election. Read my previous blog about “Will Mayor Walkup run again?

Democratic Councilwoman Shirley Scott has indicated that she will NOT be running for Mayor, but seeking re-election to her 5th term in Ward 4. I refer to her conversation with Bill Buckmaster on KJLL radio on January 12 (click here). She will be facing opposition from Republican Mike Jenkins, who had challenged her in November 2003, and announced his formal candidacy today as well, in front of the Ward 4 council office.

And reports indicate that Ward 3 Councilmember Karin Uhlich is not interested in running for Mayor either.
