The National Day of Prayer (36 U.S.C. § 119) is an annual day of observance held on the first Thursday of May, designated by the United States Congress, when people are asked “to turn to God in prayer and meditation”. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.The modern law formalizing its annual observance was enacted in 1952, although it has historical origins to a mandate by George Washington, the first president of the United States.
The Pima County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday passed a resolution which proclaimed May 3, 2012 as National Day of Prayer. For events all over Pima County commemorating this day, go to www.pimandp.org.
Here it is the first Thursday in May and time to reflect & pray to whichever God you believe in. But prayer is not always a matter of religion, as you may be praying to some Higher Power if not a God-like figure such as Jesus Christ, Muhammed, Buddha, Krishna, Bahá’u'lláh.
Let us join today in collective prayer for all that is good and positive in our world, including the safety of all missing children.
