On Wednesday February 27,2013 a large number of women’s (and girls’) organizations in Tucson honored new UA President Dr. Ann Weaver Hart, the first woman to serve in that capacity. A huge reception was held at the YWCA in their courtyard and the Louise Foucar Marshall Conference Center, at 525 Bonita Avenue in Tucson. About 400 women attended, plus a few men.

Opening remarks were made by organizer Alison Hughes, Chair of the Pima County/Tucson Women’s Commission, followed by presentation of colors & pledge of allegiance by Girl Scouts Troop 2139. Dr. Hart, the 21st President of the University of Arizona was honored by representatives of the numerous organizations present, and then delivered a very inspiring speech.

And March 1st begins Women’s “Herstory” Month, so this was indeed a fitting tribute to Dr. Hart. The article inside “Agent of Change” relates Dr. Hart’s rise to Presidency of this University, but also that she is the mother of four daughters. She served as President of Temple University in Philadelphia, and the University of New Hampshire prior to coming to Arizona.

Congratulations to Dr. Hart and welcome to Tucson.

Celebrate the many accomplishments of intelligent, hard working, powerful women and their organizations in Tucson and this country during the month of March.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors will be issuing a proclamation today for “Women in Government Day” on March 23. They meet at 9 a.m. in their meeting room at 130 W. Congress Street. PCTWC Chair Alison Hughes will be accepting the proclamation on behalf of the Women’s Commission.

There was a large audience last year at this event at the small Women’s Commission meeting room at 240 N. Court, so thus the move to a larger, outdoor plaza at TMA. Stop by & show your support for the Women’s Commission and their hard work.

It’s hard to believe in 2010 that women still aren’t being treated equally in America. They earn 78 cents to the dollar earned by men, according to latest statistics published by the National Organization for Women. This is despite the fact that the Equal Pay Act was signed back in 1963, mandating equal pay for equal work.

Today, August 26 is Women’s Equality Day, first proclaimed by President Jimmy Carter back in 1977. The Pima County Board of Supervisors’ proclamation signed on August 3, 2010 states that “today we honor the hard work and perseverence of those who helped to secure women’s suffrage in the United States, Arizona and Pima County. We reflect also on the sacrifices made by these visionaries so our daughters and granddaughters will build on these achievements of our past and move forward as one people, one Nation, and one State.”

Let us know forget the courageous women (and male allies) who fought for our right to vote back in 1920. And let us join in with the women who continue to fight for women’s equality now, like the Pima County/Tucson Women’s Commission (of which I was a PCTWC Commissioner twice).

PCTWC is sponsoring 6 seminars for women next month at 7 p.m., beginning September 9 to September 30:

Come hear Arizona Daily Star editor Tiffany Kjos, “Inside Business & KUAT pull no punches in letting you know how to get a competitive edge”, with Commissioner Maxine Goodman

-Sept. 23, Grant Writing
Commissioner Alison Hughes,University of Arizona grant writer

-Sept. 28, Math Anxiety
Commissioner Sheila Tobias, author of “Succeed with Math” & “Overcoming Math Anxiety”

-Sept. 30, Basic Intellectual Property for Women Artists and Entrepreneurs
Commissioner attorney Kathleen Williamson, Williamson & Young

All seminars will be held at 7 p.m. at the Women’s Commission, 240 N. Court Avenue (SE corner of Council) in Tucson. Suggested donation, $10. Make checks payable to Pima County/Tucson Women’s Commission by Sept. 1. Info: (520) 622-0905 or the Commission at 520-624-8318. Space limited to 25. Website: http://pimatucsonwomen.org/

Mission of PCTWC: “to assist women to achieve equality of opportunity in all aspects of life in our Republic, and to take positive action to expose, eliminate, and prevent the practice of discrimination against women.”
