Memorial services for Dr. Henry “Hank” Oyama were held today at St. Augustine’s Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave, with hundreds of people from the Tucson community in attendance. Dr. Oyama was 86 years old and passed away on March 20. He was born and raised here in Tucson, and at age 15 was innocently interned along with 120,000 other Japanese Americans in relocation camps in the western United States. Hank was sent to such a camp north of here in Poston, Arizona with his mother and sister. He was drafted into the U.S. Army after spending 15 months in that internment camp, and later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired as Lt. Colonel.

After returning to Tucson he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Arizona in education, and taught at Pueblo High School for 18 years. Following that he was hired at Pima Community College as director of bilingual and international studies, later became Associate Dean of that program, and eventually retired from PCC in 1991 as Vice President Emeritus. He was bilingual in Spanish and was well know for his advocacy for Hispanic students in Tucson, and established the Hispanic Student Endowment Fund. In 2003 an elementary school in Tucson was named after him at 2700 S. La Cholla Blvd.

Today’s service started off with a welcome by Bishop Gerald Kicanas, who said that Hank was “proud of his roots” and “rejoiced in them here in Tucson.” He also said that Hank “taught by example.” Father Gonzalo Villegas said that Hank exemplified Pope Paul VI’s statement “If you want peace, work for justice.” Particularly touching were when “Amazing Grace” and “Ave Maria” were sung.

Beautiful eulogy delivered today by Ward 5 Councilman Richard Fimbres (also a pallbearer), who spoke of Hank as a “man of integrity, a role model for all”, and listed the many awards/honors that Hank received over his lifetime including Pan Asian Man of the Year in 2005. Hank’s only surviving daughter Mary Catherine Tate spoke of her dad as the person she “learned tenacity from” and that “love is a choice.” Hank was survived by his 2nd wife Laura Ann Toledo Oyama, four children, five stepchildren, fourteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren.

Attending today’s service were many notables:

Ruben Reyes for CD 3 Congressman Raul Grijalva
Former State Senator Victor Soltero
LD 3 State Rep. Macario Saldate (pallbearer)
Pima County District 4 Supervisor Ray Carroll, District 5 Supervisor Richard Elias
Tucson City Councilmembers Richard Fimbres, Karin Uhlich, Regina Romero, former Councilman Steve Leal
TUSD governing board members Adelita Grijalva, Mark Stegeman, Kristel Foster, Cam Juarez
Sunnyside board member Eva Dong Carrillo
former TUSD Superintendents Roger Pfeuffer, Stan Paz

In 1959 he and his Caucasian college sweetheart Mary Ann Jordan challenged Arizona’s anti-miscegenation law which prohibited a Caucasian person from marrying someone Asian American. The actual statute stated: “The marriage of a person of Caucasian blood with a Negro, Mongolian, Malay or Hindu is null and void.” Hank and Mary Ann became plaintiffs in the ACLU of Arizona’s first case, to challenge this law, which was stuck down by Pima County Superior Court Judge Herbert Krucker, but then appealed to the Arizona Supreme Court. Before that court could rule, the Arizona legislature repealed that law, so Hank and Mary Ann’s case was dismissed as moot.

I (an ACLU state board member for five years) attended the ACLU of Arizona’s 50th anniversary dinner on March 20, 2009 where the attorneys for that case were honored, as well as Hank. His wife Mary Ann had passed on by then, but Hank said that she should have been there that night, because she had a harder time with the verbal abuse she endured by being a white person married to a non-white person back then. For Hank and Mary Ann, love was indeed a choice, and they had to fight to remain together and get married.

He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Arizona for this civil rights challenge.

Lugo Charities Inc. is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the 4th Annual Bike-In-A-Box Christmas event on Sunday, December 16, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral Church court yard that is located at 192 South Stone Avenue.

A special invitation to 500 under-privileged children from youth organizations, schools, churches, and children-support agencies in the Greater Tucson area will be attending this special day of giving.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive at 11:00 am to greet the children. Each child that has pre-selected will receive one of five-hundred (500) bicycles that we are planning to give away, along with a bike safety helmet provided by Tucson Medical Center of the Children’s Miracle Network.

The bicycles will remain in the box so that the parents or guardians can, together with the child, assemble the bicycle in promoting the true Christmas spirit and teaching the children the basic assembly and adjustments to their new bike.

There are many children in Tucson that may not enjoy the special occasion that Christmas should bring to all. Christmas should be remembered as a time of giving to help those in need.

Lugo Charities Inc. dba Bike-In-A-Box is a 501(C) (3) non-profit organization which assist underprivileged children, so your contribution is tax deductible. Please click on the donation link as we would appreciate your support to make this a successful event to many children in need.

Merry Christmas! Jesse Lugo

It took over 2 weeks to count all the early and provisional ballots cast in the General Election on November 6. Voter turnout statewide was 74.36%, higher at 77.98% in Pima County. The counting apparently took so long because many voters who received early ballots only turned them in on General Election Day, which slowed up the tallying process.

Stay tuned for updates, as I will post new figures as they become available — but only if the results are changed from this initial report, as ballots will be counted slowly day by day. This is the update of the latest returns, but not all precincts have reported statewide. Congratulations to the winners.

On Tuesday October 30 over 100 people – Tucson Wildlife Center volunteers, board members, supporters and community members gathered to break ground for the future Sam Goodman Wildlife Hospital, at 13275 E. Speedway (3.8 miles east of Houghton) in Pima County.

President/Founder Lisa Bates spoke of the first animal (a raccoon) that she rescued 12 years ago when all they had were a few enclosures for wildlife. Now the Tucson Wildlife Center rescues, rehabs, and releases over 800 animals a year, with the help of their 70 volunteers and donors.

MC Marcus De Leon (volunteer filmmaker) welcoming everyone

District 4 Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll said that he was able to convince his fellow board members to waive the impact fees for the Center, in order to facilitate the building of the wildlife hospital. He also spoke of St. Francis of Assisi who befriended animals (mostly birds) and a lone wolf, who is often depicted at St. Francis’ feet.

Supervisor Carroll thanking all the volunteers and board members, with President Lisa Bates

Thomas Alston, representing CD 2 Congressman Ron Barber said that the Center was a “valuable asset to the community”, and James MacAdam, representing Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild spoke of the various animals city-wide that TPD or Tucson firefighters are called to rescue & assist, and turn over to the Center for rehabilitation. Animals are released if possible, but many are too injured (i.e. broken wings of birds) to release into the wild.

Groundbreaking of the wildlife hospital, with “golden” shovels

District 3 Supervisor candidate Tanner Bell (a former UA football “Wildcat”) was present as well, as he had just made a video PSA for the Center, along with rescued “Wilbur” bobcat, who is housed there. I got to see Wilbur in his cage, and then later outside on a leash, being fed raw venison meat. Wilbur was rescued as a tiny kitten by a Pascua Yaqui boy at a construction site, and suffers from seizures and is currently taking medication.

I took photos of various rescued birds in their cages, such as a screech owl, Great Horned owl (one with a caretaker), a leucistic (almost albino) red tailed hawk , a black vulture. Other animals at the Center such as javelinas, coyotes, raccoons, and coatis were difficult to photograph due to the lighting and movement.

Several of us toured the current facilities: the one surgery room, a small ICU, animal enclosures, office, etc. The Sam Goodman wildlife hospital will be a lot larger, having more “surgical rooms, with triage, intensive care, nursery and 24-hour care by licensed veterinarians and well-trained rehabilitators”.

“Tucson Wildlife Center is set to break ground on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, to build Arizona’s first state-of-the-art wildlife hospital! President/Co-Founder Lisa Bates would like to cordially invite you to attend this exciting and historic groundbreaking event”.

Date: Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Time: Arrival 9:00 AM,
Ceremony 9:30 AM-10:00 AM.

Special guest speaker will be District 4 Supervisor Ray Carroll, a true advocate of animals. Supervisor Carroll said that this Center “does incredible things with limited resources and devoted staff and volunteers, and they truly inspire us to respect and care for wildlife and the environs we live in”.

The Sam Goldman Wildlife Hospital has been a long-time dream of Lisa Bates. Since Tucson Wildlife Center (a nonprofit) opened its doors in 1998, Southern Arizona’s orphaned and injured wildlife has poured through its doors every year by the hundreds, with numbers growing. At this point, the need for this hospital has become critical because of Tucson and expanding community encroachment on habitat. This full service, state-of-the-art hospital will include surgical rooms, triage, intensive care, nursery and 24-hour care by licensed veterinarians and well-trained rehabilitators. This hospital will also serve as a training facility for wildlife veterinarians, locally and abroad.

Don’t miss this exciting event that will serve Southern Arizona’s community.

Location: Tucson Wildlife Center
13275 East Speedway Boulevard

There’s an unprecedented 12 candidates seeking 3 positions on the Tucson Unifed School District (TUSD) Governing Board in 2012. And 54 people applied for a vacancy on the board last year. Why such popularity for a volunteer four year term on the school board of the largest school district in Tucson? With the recent elimination of the Mexican American Studies program at TUSD, more interest has been directed to these positions on the board, whose mission is to set policy for the school district, and to advise the appointed Superintendent.

Here’s a recap of who’s run for the five board seats in the last 10 years:

2002 (2 seats)
Bruce Burke (attorney) – winner
Adelita Grijalva- winner
Rosalie Lopez (attorney), incumbent
Cynthia Schiesel

2004 (3 seats)
Judy Burns – incumbent, winner
Marilyn Freed
Joel Ireland (attorney), incumbent, winner
Devin Mauney
Elena Parra
Pam Perry
Alex Rodriguez, winner
Armand Salese (attorney)

2006 (2 seats)
Bruce Burke, incumbent, winner
Miguel Cuevas
Adelita Grijalva, incumbent, winner

2008 (3 seats)
Judy Burns, incumbent, winner
Miguel Cuevas, winner
Mark Stegeman, winner

2010 (2 seats)
Adelita Grijalva, incumbent, winner
Michael Hicks, winner
Miguel Ortega
Armand Salese

54 people applied for a vacancy (after 3 term board member Judy Burns’ death in October, 2011) including former 2 term board member Bruce Burke, former candidates Marilyn Freed, Miguel Ortega, & Armand Salese. For the complete list go to the Tucsonsentinel.com article. Political newcomer Dr. Alex Sugiyama was appointed to that seat in December, 2011.

2012 (3 seats)
Twelve candidates running including incumbents Cuevas, Dr. Stegeman and Dr. Sugiyama. Click here for previous post about the official list.

The board member to go on successfully to higher office has been Raul Grijalva (served on TUSD board 1975 to 1986), then went on to become the District 5 Pima County Supervisor (1989 to 2002), and CD 7 Congressman, where he has now served 10 years. His oldest daughter Adelita was first elected to TUSD board in 2002, 10 years ago, and is up for re-election in 2014.

See full board history (1884 to present) at:
http://www.tusd1.org/contents/distinfo/Documents/boardmembers.pdf

1 term board member Rosalie Lopez (1999-2002) ran unsuccessfully against Raul for Supervisor in 2000 as a Republican, then was upset in the 2002 board election by Bruce Burke & Raul’s daughter Adelita.

Former 3 term board member attorney Eva Bacal (1979-1990) ran unsuccessfully for CD 8 House in 2004 as a Democrat and lost to Republican Congressman Jim Kolbe. Incidentally Eva’s daughter attorney Susan Bacal serves as a Justice of the Peace for Pima County Consolidated Justice Court, Precinct 8.

Former 2 term board member Dr. Brenda Even (1991-1998) ran unsuccessfully for Pima County Board of Supervisors District 4 in the Republican primary of 1998 and lost to incumbent Ray Carroll, who had been appointed to replace her late husband Supervisor John Even. She was then appointed to the PCC Board of Governors in 2001 and was elected twice, is serving till Dec. 2014.

AZ Illustrated Channel 6 held a debate tonight between District 4 Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll and fellow Republican challenger Sean Collins, a political newcomer. Political Roundtable host Jim Nintzel of the Tucson Weekly moderated the event (click here to see the video online).

The Pima County Tea Party Patriots are hosting a live debate between these same two men on August 2 (first day early voting starts for Arizona’s August 28 primary).

From Pima County Republican Party website:

Pima County Tea Party Patriots Present BoS District 4 Debate – Time 6-8:00pm
Candidates Ray Carroll and Sean Collins discuss issues – pimacountyteapartypatriots@gmail.com
Where: Cottonwood Elementary School, 9950 E Rees Loop, Tucson (Rita Ranch off Houghton)
When: Thursday, August 2, 2012, 6:00 PM

Campaign info:

Ray Carroll, 15 year incumbent Supervisor since first appointed in May 1997, former Foundation Manager for Casa de los Niños, www.electraycarroll.com

Sean Collins, political newcomer, owner of Dairy Queen in Vail, also manages “high level Department of Defense projects”,www.collins4supervisor.com

Collins is Supervisor Carroll’s first opponent since the general election of Nov. 1998. Carroll defeated Republicans Brenda Even (widow of Supervisor John Even) & Ken Marcus in the 1998 primary, then Libertarian Gay Lynn Goetzke in the General. He ran unopposed in 2000, 2004, and 2008. There is no Democrat/Green/Libertarian/Other candidate running for District 4 Pima County Supervisor, so the winner of this primary will take the seat.

Watch or attend these debates, and vote wisely on or before August 28.
